It was Spring.
Her eyes were wide open, full of surprise and wonder, downcast looking towards the brilliantly shining red jeweled ring on her hands. She grasped the beautifully decorated ring upon the tips of her fingertips as she stroked it in circles among the curves of the ring.
"So…?" She asked meekly, conserving her embarrassment, but outcrying her concealed joy. "What's this supposed to mean, Qrow?"
The winds blew as the sweet aroma of springflowers blooming across the field. A short silence arose as the rustling winds began to calm, no longer unable to conceal his embarrassment and shyness.
"I... simply picked it up when I dropped into town" Qrow muttered unconfidently.
"Well-" he became silent again, jumbling his words upon pondering what to say. Summer tilted her head and smiled contently, her expression lightened up as she chuckled upon his struggle to conceal his embarrassment.
"-Well, it's your birthday soon right? I figured I'd just get you an early birthday present as a friend" He chuckled a bit to finish off his little act, turning away to avoid direct eye contact.
"But…" She murmured leaning over with a questionably sly face. "Would a 'friend' give out such expensive looking jewelry for a mere birthday present? Also, why choose to give it to me on such a different day when no one else around hmmm?"
Her expression turned into a sly and adorably menacing look, furthering her interrogation. Her bristling smile extended far up towards her glowing cheeks,
"What else could that imply, hmmmm?" She could barely contain her laughter as her teasing began to cause Qrow to squirm inside internally. He wouldn't dare show her through any means, but his robot-like movements and dodgy eyes gave him away almost instantly.
"I-" His gaze straightened, and his body became relaxed, as if regaining his composure. His voice was no longer hesitant, and his embarrassment seemingly dissipated as he gazed toward her with reaffirmed conviction. He spoke, and it was as if the words resonated with the earth itself, the wind, and the sweet smell of summer aroma.
"I thought it was amazingly beautiful when I first gazed my eyes on it" A soft smile crept up upon the stern look on his face. "I thought to myself, 'there was no way I wasn't letting it go'" he let out a small chuckle. He then gazed at her again, seemingly piercing her with his gaze.
"..."
"It reminded me of you."
Summer grasped the ring on her hand, and slowly wore it upon her index finger. Her downcast face was somewhat melancholic, subtly rubbing around the vacant area around her ring finger. She then regained her composure, and a smile emerged on her face.
"Well, you're quite the renowned gentleman, aren't you?" Summer said jokingly.
'Who? Good 'ol me? Nah, of course not. Only for you m'lady" He sarcastically, tilting over as if he was tipping a hat.
She smiled again intently gazing upon the beautiful ring.
"Look, look Qrow! It looks good on me doesn't it?" She said joyfully showing off her newfound apparel.
"Wohoah… better than I had ever imagined!" He replied in his usual cynical voice.
The two exchanged looks, and chuckled among the beautiful sunset. The toiling winds seemingly drew them together as if the scenery itself somehow stopped time for just the two.
"A ruby huh…" Summer asked showing off her ring to Qrow. "What's supposed to mean- Power and Strength! Right?" She said in a seemingly joking manner.
"You? No way, maybe something the lines of 'Overly Courageous', 'Zealous Energy', and 'Hopeless Hope!'" He shouted out in irony. "And!-"
"-and love…" Summer murmured softly. Her cheeks bristled bright pink as she held her hands close to her face.
Qrow grasped her hand that wore the ring and brought it closer to his face.
"As i thought!" He said confidently. "It certainly is beautiful!" He said chuckling as he turned toward her with a big smile.
