Eren breathed in the crisp night air, ignoring the fact that it burned his lungs. He was glad for the extra layers, as well as the thicker cloaks. It was a good thing that the military had forseen the sub-zero temperatures of the north. He could only assume that Commander Erwin had done his reseach before allowing this.

"Its even more beautiful than I imagined," he heard Armin say.

"Yeah," Connie muttered. "If only it wasn't so damn cold."

"So what if its cold!" Sasha practically shouted. "We've never seen anything like this before! Its so beautiful!"

"Yeah, I guess you're right. But its still cold." Connie replied, rubbing his gloved hands together.

Eren stared around at the frozen landscape. He couldn't argue with their statements, nor did he want to. He remembered Armin reading aloud from that old book. He remembered hearing about the immense beauty of the land of ice. But the book couldn't have possibly explained just how beautiful it was. The sight alone was enough to bring tears to his eyes.

"Why are you crying?" He turned to see Mikasa staring at him. He wiped the icy water on his sleeve before it had a chance to freeze to his skin.

"Its just so beautiful." He replied in a quiet voice, almost afraid that talking would shatter this beautiful world and send them back to hell.

Mikasa nodded silently and turned her gaze back to the jagged mountains to their left. Eren followed her gaze. The full moon made the snow sparkle like tiny gems. Bright stars dotted the dark sky. He loved the simlicity of this land. Everything was black and white.

It was then that a teal blue light streaked across the sky. Eren looked up and gasped as the sky was painted a thousand colors. The gentle lights faded in and out, dancing across the sky to music that couldn't be heard. Colors appeared suddenly, then disappeared as quickly as they'd came.

"What is this?" Eren heard himself ask. He received no answer.

He watched as the colorful lights swished and swayed in their strange dance. Pinks chased greens, blues danced with purples. No two lights were the same color. He reached his hand up, knowing that he couldn't touch the lights but wishing that he could. It was at that moment that he wished the wings on his back weren't just cloth.

Just as quickly as they'd appeared the lights disappeared, leaving them in the dull moonlight again. Eren continued to stare at the dark sky, hoping for the lights to return. When they didn't he directed his gaze to his team mates. Most of them were still staring at the sky, with the exeption of Captain Levi who was staring forward, almost as if he hadn't been staring wide eyed at the sky just thirty seconds ago.

"What was that?" Connie asked, sounding dazed.

Eren wasn't expecting anyone to reply. He knew for a fact that Armin didn't know. He highly doubted Mikasa knew. And Sasha was still staring wide eyed at the sky with a child like expression on her face.

"The Northern Light." He heard Captain Levi say. "Erwin read about them. We should be seeing them a lot."

Eren smiled at the thought of seeing them again. Of course, he didn't miss Captain Levi's slip up. The simple fact that he had made him smile even wider.

AN: This has been on my computer for a few months. After finding it and reading it again I realised that its not as bad as I initally thought. Not the best, but I don't feel as ashamed of it as I did when I first wrote it.
