He had sat there waiting for a period of time, how much time? he had lost track. he heard a young woman with long black hair and burgundy eyes call to him, he looked down the long staircase to see Hibiki and Kanade waiting for him. "just because you sit by aunt Saya's side doesn't mean she is going to wake up sooner, it's only a few more months to wait. come home, dad's worried about you," Kanade knew that he would return but she worried for her uncle as he had become so depressed recently, her aunt should be waking up about now, Kai had told her it would probably be another three months before she fully awoke and emerged out of her cocoon. both her and her twin sister Hibiki had so many questions and so many things to say, they knew the history and what had happened with their mother in New York and at first they were deeply hurt but the more they learned the more they accepted what had happened and even in the past 10 years had fully forgiven their aunt, they even saw her actions as a release for their poor mother. They were both painfully aware of how much their aunt had loved her twin and of how much it had destroyed her to do what she needed to do. The sisters were both in the tomb together in spirit. Their uncle had explained exactly what had happened in full detail once they were old enough to understand they had also seen the records of Saya's life from red shield. As Haji joined the twins he saw their longing gazes that were directed at the sealed tomb, they had never seen the cocoon or the sleeping queen within those protective strands woven around her. He could feel her heart quickening to a semi normal rhythm and could sense her wakedness as it had begun to return. He was honestly tired of waiting, he had mourned for her and had missed her so dearly. All he wanted was to hold her. When he finally was able to make it back to Okinawa he had learned that Saya had been hibernating for 5 years already, to give himself some solace and to leave her a way to know he was alive and well in case she awoke early he had begun to leave her a single rose every month, Kai had found him after that and taken him back to Omoro, when he heard of the sadness and pain his supposed death had caused his beloved it took everything not to weep. All he had wanted more than ever before was to hold her close and tell her that everything would be alright again that she didn't have to feel alone, because he was going to be by her side for eternity. She deserved happiness and once again he had caused her pain, even indirectly, he couldn't stand the thought of her sleeping and soon waking to think herself alone in the world, it broke his heart. As they returned to Omoro the girls who were in fact 29 but looked 16 chattered about everything and nothing, trying to lift his mood, he joined the idle chatter in the form of nods and odd answers, but his mind was elsewhere. Once back in the bar, he retreated upstairs to find Kai sat on his bed, not that he used it, waiting for him. Kai looked at him with an understanding smile. "Hey Haji can we talk?" Haji merely nodded, Kai had noticed his withdrawal and knew the reason why, he was determined before Saya woke, that Haji would learn to smile and laugh again, he would do it for her. Sitting gently on the chair across from Kai, the middle aged man put his plan into action. "i'm having a music showcase tomorrow night and I was wondering if you would play the cello, I know that you enjoy playing and that you usually reserve playing for when you visit Saya, but I thought it would be a nice change to hear you play with an audience," again Haji merely nodded and quietly moved to the window, " I know you miss her, but don't you think she would have wanted you to smile while she slept, so that she knows that you have experienced happiness?" Haji looked shocked by his statement, Kai couldn't imagine why, all Saya had ever wanted for him was happiness, Haji looked ready to break at the mention of Saya's wishes for himself and Kai knew he was processing and agreeing with his statement in his head but dare not agree verbally. Haji didn't know how to respond, he knew that Kai was right, Saya had made it clear through out the entirety of their time together previously that she wanted for him to be happy whether it was with her or with another. Haji simply continued to watch the sunset, after a moment he turned back to his friend, he saw the feelings play across his face, he had become rather close to Kai over the years as he grew he had become very much like Joel in the care of diva's daughter and a true friend and brother to Haji, he had married and had his own children and in all this had not neglected to integrated Haji into his children's George and Riku's life, Moa had also been very kind to him, when everything got too much they would do this, get him to play or insist on a break away with the family, he had become so comfortable with family life it had made him wonder what his own family may have been like with Saya. he could see Saya in the girls, but he could also see the kinder side of Diva and the sweetness of Riku in them, he found it easier around the twins than Kai at times, they were what he knew as chiropteran queens he had taught them about themselves, they had grown close to the memory of Saya and he knew they desperately wished to meet her, they even seemed to grieve her absence and that brought him comfort in knowing they were comfortable with who they were and with who their aunt and mother were, he knew he could face Saya with a smile on that front at least. as the days passed Kai would get him to play the cello at night and would invite all of the family down to Omoro to fill the now short waiting time until Saya awoke, after that night he learnt to smile more for her so that when she did awake, he could greet her with happy memories of her nieces and brother. He visited her every evening telling her of the days event he even went to Paris to find something he had long since left there for her, as the day drew closer he could sense her restlessness, her impatience and the sweetest thing of all, her heartbeat. Her heart was now getting stronger by the day even the twins could sense her awakening, a few more days, just a few more days. It was getting late one evening and Kai had dozed off downstairs as he stirred he assumed that Mao had already gone to bed, as he trudged up the stairs Haji went running past him, shouting Haji's name, the chevalier turned on his heel and simply smiled and turned back to the door, sighing Kai carried on heading in the direction of his bedroom, then woke to the fact that Haji's actions and impatience could only mean one thing, Saya was waking up, he went to his wife and warned her to expect company, Mao got up and told the girls, who had already become very aware, the girls moved to wait patiently downstairs in the seating area of the pub. Mao prepared a bath and a bed for Saya. As Haji approached the tomb he could hear her movement within the cocoon. her movements were becoming more and more frantic, her heartbeat more erratic, and her presence more and more intoxicating. As he jumped up the steps he arrived just in time within the tomb to see Saya break out of her silken protection and to fall straight into his arms entangled in her own hair, Saya was there with him finally after so long, after all the years she looked the same as the first day he had met her at the zoo, and he would not trade that meeting for anything or anyone. He snapped out of his daze to look down at her face, her warm eyes were silently spilling tears down her face, she looked so confused and so understanding at the same time, but her eyes showed more than that they showed ultimate grief that broke his heart, knowing his supposed death had caused this pain. She tentatively and very gingerly touched his face, it took everything to not lean into that touch, but she didn't know him yet and to act in such a manner would be inappropriate, she was still his queen and a lady in her own right. He merely offered her his neck and encouraged her to take what she needed to remember and fully awaken. Once she had her fill she pulled away to look at him and in that one look everything that had remained unsaid over the decades for the both of them were so visible and obvious it hurt. His queen was awake and alive once again, only one word escaped her lips, his name. This was her life now and in this life she would smile and she would smile for him.
