"Kazehaya, wake up!" Sawako poked him as he slept under a blooming cherry blossom tree. The dark-haired boy sprung up at the sound of her voice.
"I wasn't asleep!" he lied. "I was just... thinking." Sawako giggled at the look on his face. He was so cute when he was flustered.
"We should go home," she said. "The sun's almost setting."
"Then let's go," he said as he took her hand and laced his fingers with hers. Shouta and Sawako walked home in silence, enjoying the presence of one another. He wished they could have stayed like this forever--holding hands and walking together without a care in the world. Alas, all good things must come to an end. Shouta realized this when he ended up at Sawako's doorstep. He didn't want to say goodbye. He racked his brain for something to say to her, but he came up with nothing.
'Sawako is... just that--Sawako. She's special to me, but I can't even think of anything to say to her,' he thought. An idea finally came to mind, so he thought he'd try it.
"S-Sawako, see you tomorrow," he stumbled over his words. The shorter girl gave him her full attention. He'd never said her name before. He always called her Kuronuma. She liked the way it sounded, the way that he said her name.
Shouta started off to his own house after telling her goodbye, but he stopped in his tracks when a small hand grabbed his wrist. "Wait... Shouta." He looked at her as she did when he called her by her name. Shouta's face turned bright red.
"Yeah?" Sawako placed her other hand on his forearm.
"Be careful on your way home. There have been a lot of landslides in the backwoods lately," she said. Shouta gazed into her eyes for a good period of time. A part of him wanted to turn away so she couldn't see his flustered face; the other part wouldn't let him tear his eyes away from hers. As if her were hypnotized by her, Shouta subconsciously moved closer and closer to her. Sawako also involuntarily leaned into him. She closed her eyes and brushed her lips lightly against his. He kissed her back a little more confidently.
"Sawako, I..."
Shouta never finished his sentence because it was at that time he really woke up. He had fallen asleep under the cherry blossom trees again. He wasn't disappointed that he woke up though. He was just glad to be able to see her in his dreams. His only complaint was that in reality, Sawako would never talk to him like that. He would never be able to talk to her so intimately, as it would be hard for him to call him by his given name. He was sure the real thing would sound much better, but just the way he imagined her talking to him made him happy.
"Sawako, you have no idea," he said to himself. "Maybe one day you'll understand me for real. I'll wait for you until then."
