Those words sealed it.
He only hesitated for a second before answering his mother. Only his love for her keeping him from immediately telling her that she would be leaving without him. He couldn't leave the Autobots, couldn't leave Arcee. Not at a time like this; he wanted to help anyway he could.
"I'm staying. I'm sorry." He saw his mother's face drop and then close with harsh acceptance. He watched her leave, only a small amount of regret lingering. He had made his decision and he would stand by it. He was staying with Arcee.
