Curtains

----------

From behind the curtains, she watches them.

They are standing on the grand stage, nodding as they listen to what they are expected to do. Glowing. Happy. Carefree. In other words, all the things that she is not.

She has never been able to get him to perform with her on stage, though she has spent a lifetime trying. And now, out of nowhere, a freaky math girl is able to show up abruptly and convince him to try out for the musical, with successful results.

She hears his charming laugh and feels her breath catch in her throat. What she wouldn't have given to be the only one for him. But she knows she'll never have him, and lately, that's just fine with her.

What they have together is beautiful and magical – everything she's ever wanted, everything she's ever dreamed of, and it still is. There isn't one person on the earth who wouldn't want that, so of course she longs to have what they have. Just not with him, not anymore. How could she have ever liked him? They are so different. He cares about pointless things like orange balls and Einsteinettes, while she cares about things of importance like the theatre and musicales.

She observes the simple yet genuine chemistry between them. Why is it that they can have their happy ending, but she can't? Maybe if she pays close enough attention, one day she can have it too.

How quickly everything has changed. She has never known a life behind the curtains, away from the spotlight – but that is now where she is.

There is nothing she can do about it. Instead of wasting precious moments being spiteful, Sharpay Evans swallows her pride and puts on a small smile, watching simply nothing but Troy and Gabriella, as they continue to break free.

Even from behind the curtains, it is an incredibly marvelous spectacle.

A/N: Hey, thanks for reading. This drabble came out a little differently than I originally intended; it was supposed to be darker, but it came out light and the ending was rather bittersweet. Should I stay away from writing drabbles? Please leave me a review… I would really appreciate it.
