TITLE: Conversations Under an Engine

AUTHOR: Maid M

PAIRING: Kaylee/Simon

DISCLAIMER: If I owned this show it would still be on the air. And Simon and Kaylee would be snogging in the engine room.

AUTHORS NOTE: Thank you to Lilyhead for inspiring me (or forcing me, depends on your perspective) to write an all-dialogue Kaylee/Simon fic. Thanks for getting me to write a fic in YOUR favourite pairing. It was very selfless of you.

"...and this here's the catalyzer. It's what got broke when we ran outta of life support. It still got the Captain's blood on it, see?"

"Yes. That's very interesting."

"Ooh! And there was this one time, before you came aboard, I wasn't feeling too well so I asked Mal to fix the hydraulics in the press regulator for me, but he ended up crossin' the drive feeds with the grav thrust and we lost all the lights. Couldn't see a damn thing. Took me four whole hours to fix it all in the dark. Ain't that hilarious?"

"Hmm? Oh yes it's, uh... funny."

"I'm gettin' off topic. Well over here's the steamer, and that over there's the press regulator. Ooh! That's the grav boot. That gets bust and we'll be floatin' around like corks in the ocean."

"And that would be bad."

"I'm sorry, am I borin' you? Engines probably ain't that different from people. Probably know everything I'm talking about, with all your doctorin'."

"Yes. Yes. It's like cake."

"Well I best be getting' on with my work then."

"Maybe you could... could we just stay here for a while? I mean it's nice under here. It's cozy."

"I know what you're trying to say."

"You do?"

"Yeah. Sometimes I just like to lie here with Serenity, watch her movin'. Watch her workin'. She's what keeps us all alive out here in the black."

"Yes, exactly. Lying with Serenity. Oh look, the compression coil."

"That's the reg couple."

"Right, right. I, uh, meant that."

"I like bein' down here with you."

"Yes. That's nice to."

"Hmm."

"Lao-tyen boo, what are you two doing down there?"

"Captain!"

"Mal, I... ow! Ai ya."

"Oh baby, are you alright?"

"Yes, I, I'm, uh."

"What were you doin' under the gorram engine?"

"Nothin' Cap'n. I was just showing Simon Serenity's workings."

"Yes. She was showing me how the engine worked. See, that's the port compression."

"That's the thermal cap, honey"

"Right."

"Look I don't care if he's memorised every goddamn part of this boat, you shouldn't be under there. There's work to be done."

"Don't worry Mal. Nothin's broke at the moment."

"Well I, uh, best be going. I have to go and, uh... be gone. So Kaylee, I'll see you around."

"Simon..."

"Goodbye."

"Cap'n, what you have to go scare him off for. We was havin' a nice time."

"You best be gettin' back to work, Little Kaylee. Don't want Serenity breakin' from beneath us."

"Alright. But you still didn't have to scare him off."

"Well I'm a mean man. Don't get into any trouble now."

"Not like anythin's gonna jump outta the engine and attack me. Ain't that right Serenity? You'll always be here to protect us."
