'I'm afraid that you've miscarried.' Those words from the doctor were what broke Brennan. She felt like her heart physically broke, but knew that it wasn't possible. She was beyond logical at this point. Her stomach ached with the mental pain that was racing through her. She wasn't aware of Booth clutching at her hand or calling her name, or the rapid beats of the heart rate monitor echoing her own heart beats.
She wasn't aware as Booth led her out of the clinic and into the SUV, or as he walked her into their apartment and put the bags down in the hallway.
He rested his hand on the small of her back, leaning down to try to catch her gaze.
'Baby, are you alright?' he asked.
'I'm going to have a shower,' she said quietly, turning to walk towards the bathroom.
'Bones,' he called and she stopped, not turning to face him. 'I'm sorry.'
'It's not your fault Seeley, I must just not be…' he heard her breath catch, a small sob escaping her lips. She couldn't be bothered explaining the science, the logic and details involved. She felt hollow, lifeless. The loss she had experienced was unexplainable.
'Bones,' he called again, but she had already closed the door to the bathroom, shutting him out. He closed his eyes, falling against the table in the hallway. All he wanted to do was hold her, to tell her that it was going to be alright.

Half an hour later he began to worry. He carefully opened the bathroom door to hear the muffled sobs of the woman he loves, the shower still running. He pulled back the shower curtain to reveal her curled up at the bottom of the bath, the shower running cold over her naked skin.
'Bones,' he sighed, quickly stripping off his clothes and stepping into the bath. He turned on the hot water and wrapped his arms around her, holding her freezing body in his arms. 'I'm so sorry, baby. I'm so, so sorry.' He heard to sob louder, her fingers clutching him to her as she crawled onto his lap, allowing him to cradle her.
'Our baby,' he heard her sob. 'Our baby.'
'I know, angel, I know,' he kissed her forehead. Their bodies were practically one in this intimate embrace, legs and arms entangled to an extent that it couldn't be distinguished where Booth ended and Brennan begun.
'It was a girl,' she continued to sob onto his shoulder. He stroked her hair, holding her head against his chest.
'I'm sorry,' he repeated. 'God, you don't know how much I wanted this baby for us.' She pulled back slightly to look at him. He felt the tears begin to flow freely at the look in her eyes. Love. Despair. Hope.
'I'm sorry too,' she said quietly. 'I wanted a baby for us too.'
'This isn't your fault, angel,' he whispered, holding her head. 'We can recover. I love you Bones.'
'I love you too Seeley,' she murmured against his chest. But was this something they could recover from? But as he held her closer she couldn't help thinking that maybe they could.
