Bridge knew that people watched him. Both critical and careful. Wondering what his powers entailed. What his role was.

Roles. People distributed them with such ease, as if they enjoyed acting out a play. The leader, the attitude, the Spartan, and the feminine. He knew that there was a role waiting for him, should he choose to take it: the clairvoyant. So far, he chose not to. He didn't want to be defined the way others chose to be. For him, reading aura's was just another way to pass the time. What his friends called 'gifted' and some of the more blunt cadets called 'creepifying' was, for him, just another much needed source of distraction.

At night, distracted was harder to come by. Whenever he was able to get away with it, Bridge didn't take the sleeping pills that Kat prescribed him to ward off unwanted dreams. He hadn't woken up screaming in a while, and Kat believed it was a sign that the nightmares were going away. Bridge let her believe so.

She thought that she was protecting him but often it was Kat who needed the reassurance of the lie. He hadn't woken up screaming because he had not let himself sleep much.

Bridge waited until he was sure that Sky's breathing had become deep and even before he slipped out of bed. He walked down the almost vacant halls, gliding through the base like the ghost he sometimes he wished he were.

Distraction was sparse, but there it was: the base that never slept.
