"Some people claim that keeping the same perspective will dull your world, make it boring and uninteresting, that's why people need a change in their lives, there are no negatives to a new perspective." - A friend
Landin gained consciousness in a pure black void. It was dead silent and there was nothing around him, only darkness as far as the eye could see. It felt like time had slowed down to a crawl, seconds felt like hours, and Landin couldn't help but feel scared. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't move.
Landin started to hear whispering, faint at first, then slowly rising, it was hard to make out the words. The void seemed to crack every time the whispering stopped, they were getting closer to him. The whispering had turned into incoherent yelling, and in the distance, a pair of red, glowing eyes were staring back at him, slowly approaching.
The void started to shake, and pieces of it fell down. The cracks were so close to Landin at this point, and the pair of eyes had gotten closer. Landin could suddenly understand the yelling, "YOU'RE END IS NEAR." the voice repeated continuously, driving Landin to near insanity.
Most of the void was gone, replaced by a medieval-like scene, a castle stood on clouds at the very end of a medieval city. The pair of eyes was now a figure, and it showed no sign of slowing down. The yelling had gotten twice as loud. Landin was now on a piece of the void, he could tell that it was hanging on by a thread.
Suddenly, and abruptly, everything had stopped, the yelling, the violent shaking, the cracking, everything. The approaching figure had disappeared and Landin had regained his movement, the only sound was the genty chirping of the birds. Landin glanced around at the now open scenery, he noticed that he was in the air and that he was standing on the last piece of the void, it prevented him from falling. He took deep breaths trying to calm himself. He was shocked when he felt a hand go on his shoulder, he quickly turned and saw red eyes. "Don't trust anyone," it said before the last piece of void disappeared, causing Landin to fall. Right before he hit the ground, he...
Landin woke up, covered in sweat, gasping for air, that nightmare had haunted him for as long as he could remember. He glanced at his clock, "4:00 a.m," it read.
"Another day, another nightmare," Landin said before getting out of bed and walking to his wardrobe.
He opened the wardrobe, grabbed a black jacket, a red t-shirt, a small heart locket and a pair of dark jeans, then he walked into his bathroom. He looked himself in the mirror and was instantly attracted to his green eyes. He picked up his colored contacts that were lying on the bathroom counter and put them in when he looked back, he saw brown eyes instead. He was so concentrated on his eyes that he almost missed the figure behind him.
He sighed, "Hey James," he said, turning towards the figure.
The figure stepped out of the shadows, he looked like an exact copy of Landin. "Hey," he said disappointingly, "I was hoping you wouldn't notice me."
"Why, did you want to scare me?" he said, taking off his pajamas and replacing them with the clothes he got.
"How'd you know?"
"We're in the same head James, it's kinda hard to not know what you're going to do."
"Well then, explain the countless times I've scared you."
"It was always a few seconds after I'd woken up." Landin put on his jacket, "Now get back in my head, I don't have time for chitchat."
"What do you mean, it's four in the morning."
"I still have to make breakfast."
"You don't have to, you choose to."
"It takes the stress off of our parents," Landin opened the bathroom door, "If you're not going to go away then at least don't talk to me."
"Fine I'll go," James started to sink into the ground, "but I'll be back."
Landin gave James a smirk before he was completely gone, then, he went out of his room and went downstairs. He went into the kitchen and started to prepare breakfast. He made the usual American breakfast, pancakes, bacon, and eggs. It took him an hour to finish making breakfast, and when he did, he could hear footsteps on the stairs. Sounds like someone finally woke up, he thought. He went out of the kitchen and was greeted with a tired Hispanic boy.
"Look who's up, Did the smell of my amazing cooking wake you?" Landin said sarcastically.
"Don't try to flatter yourself, last time you made breakfast, the eggs looked like pieces of coal."
"Well, that was the first time I cooked, I've been practicing since then."
The boy sat down at the dining room table, "Then let's see if you've improved," he said.
Landin went back into the kitchen and grabbed two plates, "At least I know nothing is burnt."
"Wow, you already did better than before," the boy said as Landin placed a plate in front of him.
Landin sat down, "Just eat the food Marco," he said.
Marco chuckled, then he started to eat, his face showed surprise, "You did better than I expected," he said.
Landin gave a nod before beginning to eat his food. After he was done, he put his dishes in the sink, went into the living room and plopped down on the couch. He turned on the TV and switched to his favorite channel. A show about a magical being traveling to earth was currently on, this was his least favorite show but it was decent in his opinion. He started to get into the show, in fact, he was so into it that he completely forgot his surroundings, a couple of hours had passed by and he didn't even notice. He was snapped back into reality by a girls voice.
"Are you okay Landin?" she said worryingly.
He glanced around the room, Marco was to his right, and his best friend Kate was to his left. "Yeah, I'm fine, I was just really concentrated on that show.
"Seemed more like you were hypnotized to me."
"You know how I am with my shows."
"I know, but you seem to be doing that 'thing' with everything recently."
"True," he said, getting up.
"Where are you going?" Marco asked.
"Bathroom," he said while entering the downstairs bathroom.
When he entered the bathroom, he looked at his locket, his mother had given it to him. He didn't remember much about her, but he knew she was a good person. His dad had given him a watch, but someone stole it when he was eight. He opened the locket, a music box started to play. Inside the locket was a picture of a man, a woman, and a boy, they were all smiling. Landin could feel James' presence.
"Do you remember my parents James?" he said, not looking away from the locket.
James sighed, "I only remember as much as you."
"I wonder how different my life would be if I was still with them."
"You would have a very different life, you'd probably still be friends with Kate, but you'd never meet Marco, Jackie, Janna, Alfonzo, Ferguson, and Daniel (He'll be introduced in the next chapter.), There's a chance your life could have been better, but you already have such a great life."
"Yeah," he closed the locket, "maybe it was better for me to be adopted," he turned to James, "Thanks, James."
"No problem," he said, slowly fading out of existence.
Landin took a long look in the mirror, then he splashed his face with cold water, and went out of the bathroom.
Authors note
