Prologue
A young she-cat stalked through the brush. The base of her pelt was a light brown. It was covered with dark brown and orange patches. Light tan was sprinkled on her paws, chest, and ears.
A plump, brown, water vole sat in front of her, gnawing on a blade of grass. Her belly was close to the ground, she felt like her paws barely seemed to touch it. The river rushed gently in her ears, making her feel calm, relaxed. A cat yowled her name. The vole scurried away in fear. Her ears twitched in annoyance, but she lifted her head.
A tiger-like figure had flung at her, and it was now yowling with all its might. Panic and adrenaline rushed into her like a flooding river. The larger cat landed on her, and it's claws digging deep into her shoulder. The she-cat yowled in pain and landed on the forest floor with a thud.
The attacker's weight was soon lifted from a grey blur. The she-cat watched, as, what looked like Hailpaw, battled the pale brown attacker.
"Hailpaw!" The she-cat cried, she clawed toward him. I must help him! She grunted as the pain in her shoulder grew worse. She shuddered as she stood up.
She leaped into the battle, hissing in pain. She landed on the attacker and tried to bite their spine. It yowled so loudly it rung in her ears. The light brown tiger whipped back to look at her, snarling. He batted her with his paw. She flew off him, skidding across the forest. She gazed across the green before she all she saw was darkness.
The she-cat awoke, dazed and confused. The first thing she thought was, "Is Hailpaw ok?" She mewed. She tried to move, but her muscles screamed at her in agony. The she-cat winced.
"Don't move." grumbled a voice behind her.
"Help…." The apprentice whimpered
A tom soon appeared in front of her. The tom's pelt was a creamy white. A large splotch of light brown covered his eyes. Silver fur grew on his muzzle and spread upward.
"You're extremely hurt, you can't move!" He rasped.
"But what if Hailpaw is-"
"But Hailpaw is fine." A low mew sounded from the opening of the cave.
A calico sphynx tom padded into the cave. His yellow eyes glanced down at the young she-cat. The she-cat strained her eyes to see which cat it was
"Father?" The she-cat mewed.
"Redpaw, not right now." The sphynx replied.
"Briarface, may I speak with you?" The old cream tom nodded. The toms padded to the back of the cave, but Redpaw could still hear them.
"How is she?" The sphynx tom asked all of the bravery in his voice had faded into fear.
"I haven't seen such a bad case since Briarlight of ThunderClan," Briarface replied. "I'm sorry, but she might never become a warrior."
Silence filled the cave. Redpaw realized that that vole she tried to catch, would be her last. She would never be able to walk, hunt or- even become a warrior.
"Did the Thunderclan cat's claws touch her shoulder?" The sphinx asked, his voice almost at a whisper.
"Orangeclaw you're a genius!" Brairface exclaimed.
