Prompt #1

Kids These Days

Kirova POV

Kids these days!

They have no self-respect, no conscience, no guidance! Their parents dump them here and expect us to… to magically turn them into decent beings!

Take Hathaway for example. She has done nothing but cause strain on this academy with all of her fights, her constant sneaking out and dress code violations, and then… then she decides to break out of the fully secure, gated and warded facility with a royal Moroi, the Dragomir princess no less! Does she care about the hours we have spent tracking her down? No. Does her mother? Her father? Ha!

She would have made the perfect blood whore. Sadly I could not make that happen. Maybe one day.

It doesn't matter right now, though. Rosemarie Hathaway is the least of my problems. At least she understands the importance of this institution. Ever since her stint in the free world she hasn't been such a pain. It's the other brats that remain problematic.

Most of them have been left here, like Hathaway, to be raised by the academy. Some were left because it was the safest option; others simply because they had no place to call home. Either way they have always been behind the secure walls and now they want more.

They want the things they see on reality television. Things like iPhones, Pinkberry, unnatural holes in their faces, something called a 'Twitter', and don't get me started on the clothing. If that isn't bad enough we keep having interaction problems between these hormonal annoyances.

Zeklos is on the top of that list. This month alone we've caught him with 12 girls in various places, all after curfew, and each time at least one article of clothing was missing.

It doesn't stop at the upper school either.

The smaller terrors have been worse than ever. Fights have broken out like crazy. This year alone we've had 42 broken noses, 18 sprained appendages, 26 black eyes, and 7 broken fingers from unnecessary violence in the lower campus.

What in God's name is going on with these kids?

I could have been a model! I could have been rich and famous! But no, I had to take my mother's advice and work with these little nuisances. "It will be more rewarding," she said. Ha! The stress alone would have anyone start pulling their hair out in five minutes tops. "You can shape the lives of the future!" Half of these kids won't even live long enough to see the future. How can I shape their lives when we all know their fate is doomed?

Kids these days are not like my generation or those before me. The world is changing and the kids are only adapting to what is before them. No matter how hard we try to keep them safely locked in our gilded towers of tradition they're still going to rebel and there is nothing we can do to stop them.

Why do we even try?
