All That's Left

By: ChoCedric

She looks like a marble statue, a beautiful porcelaine doll. As he kneels over her body, stroking her glossy red hair and her glorious face, he feels self-disgust swell up inside of him. Howe could he have been so thick to ever think he could have anything normal in his life?

He saw her fighting Avery, and he heard the man's cruel words: "You can't fight forever, pretty!" And then, in slow motion, he saw her fall. He wished he could have saved her, but he was too far away to get to her – he remembers seeing it all happen right before his very eyes, without him being able to do anything. He saw the green light envelop her, and the life leave her brown orbs. They are still open now, but they are staring aimlessly off into the distant beyond.

He takes her cooling hand in his, and he feels tears enter his eyes. Ron and Hermione come and stand by him. Ron has a numb look on his visage, and Hermione is already sobbing. "I'm so sorry, Gin," Harry whispers as he strokes her limp fingers. "I should've known that you getting involved with me would kill you. I'm so sorry."

Even though he only spenht a few short weeks with her, he knows that Ginny Weasley was the love of his life. Never before had he felt so happy, so perfect, so ... normal. He felt like a perfectly average teenage boy in love, not some hero who needs to save the world. Their walks down by the lake, their kisses in the sunlight, made him feel complete. She understood him in a way not even ron or Hermione did.

But now, his role as the hero has come crashing down upon him again. Not only has he just seen Severus Snape kill the one man who truly believed in him, now he's lost the girl that meant everything to him. He doesn't think he can ever face the Weasleys again, and he doesn't know if he'll ever be able to let any more love into his heart.

As he kisses her forehead and gently closes her eyes, he knows that this is the end of an era. Now he has to step up and be a man, but he knows he'll be forever lost without her love. Now he only has anger and a thirst for revenge to carry him through, but he's been through so much tragedy in his life that he supposes that this is what he must live with. "I loved you, Gin," he whispers, stroking her hand one last time as he prepares to leave her side, even though it hurts him tremendously. ""I'll love you forever," he reiterates, and as he gets up and puts on a brave face in front of Ron and Hermione, he knows that vengeance and hatred are all that's left.
