Very short one-shot I just had to write. Basically, I was listening to music, and Stoick saves Hiccup came on. You know, the song that plays when Hiccup finds out Stoick is dead? Yeah, super sad. Anyway, that sparked this story.
Enjoy!
"DAD!"
Stoick jumped out of his chair upon hearing the yell. He had put Hiccup down almost an hour ago, so the five-year old shouldn't have been up. Or screaming his father's name.
"DADDY!"
The Chief raced up the stairs, heart beating furiously. Every so often, he would be reminded of Valka in his young son, and the ache would return. As would the fear of dragons taking his son.
Stoick opened Hiccup's door, and found his son sitting up in bed, tears streaming down his cheeks. "Hiccup?"
The child looked up, relief flooding his face. "Dad!" He raced to his father and threw his arms around his waist. "You're alive!"
Stoick frowned, and knelt in front of his son. "Why wouldn't I be?"
Hiccup closed his eyes, tears falling anew. "I-I had a-a n-n-nightmare. You d-died. A d-dragon killed you."
Stoick nodded solemnly and hugged Hiccup tightly. "Tell me more, son."
He could feel tears hitting his back as Hiccup continued. "I-I was older. Trying to f-fight a madman. H-he made a dragon attack me, b-but you j-jumped in the way and s-saved me."
Stoick hugged his son tighter. "That's why I'm here, son. To protect you. My purpose in life is to give my last breath to ensure you can take another."
Hiccup squeezed tight. "I love you, Dad."
Stoick smiled. "I love you too, Hiccup."
"HICCUP!"
Stoick didn't have time to think. As soon as the Alpha dragon turned it's back, Stoick faced his son. Confronting Drago.
He raced ahead, getting Gobber's attention. As he ran, his mind went back to that night, years earlier, where he died to save Hiccup in his dream.
Stoick threw his axe into the rope, lowering the mast of the ship. He raced across, watching as Toothless slowly advanced on his son.
"HICCUP!"
He couldn't lose Hiccup. He had just gained Valka back. They were finally a family again. Stoick wouldn't let Drago Bludvist take that away.
He watched in horror as Toothless's plasma blast charged, and knew what was going to happen next.
"SON!"
As he jumped in the way of Toothless's blast, he recalled his words. 'To give my life, to ensure you can take another.'
Yeah. Sad.
While Stoick might not be the best parent out there, he definitely cared for Hiccup. But, he was a Viking, and Viking's didn't really do emotion. But I'm sure that Hiccup and Stoick had some genuine father-son moments in the years before Toothless.
Thanks for reading!
