Words on Monitor

(Eve's Alerts)

A dark room. The walls are pristine white. A small work bench sits in the corner next to a plain, simple bed.

In the centre of the room, a monitor, the only source of light other than what is seeping in from under the door, beeps. It is attached to a human sized pod.

If you look closely, you will notice that there are words on the display. The words seem to be slowly changing.

Code: Battle Seraph ready to install.

A small, petite girl gets up from the chair in the other corner. She slowly walks up to the pod, as if she is hesitant, and presses a button, and the pot hisses open. She pauses for a moment, thinking about what she is about to do, before placing a foot into the pod. She is about to lie down, when…
the door slams open, the light illuminating her delicate features. Glistening silver hair flows down her back. Her clothes are white with blue crystals imbedded in them and her piercing golden eyes gaze intently at the boy standing in the doorway.

The boy has sandy blond hair, spiked up at uneven angles. He is dressed in the same colours as the girl that is about to get in the pod. A pair of glistening silver guns are strapped into a holster at his side. "Eve!" He shouts "What are you doing? You… you said you wouldn't!"

The girl (Eve) looks up at him with a slightly sad expression, before giving him a smile (Obviously fake, the boy thinks.) and telling him in a soft voice, "Please leave, Chung. Don't make this decision any harder for me."

The boy in the doorway (Chung)'s features contort into a pained grimace and he takes a few steps towards me before speaking. His hand rises slightly, but falls again. He speaks, but his voice comes out slightly strained. "Don't get in! Please! For all of us… for me…"

The last two words came out as a quiet whisper, but Eve hears it nonetheless.

'What did he mean by that?' Eve thinks. She decides not to dwell on it, and attempts to swing the glass door shut. She almost succeeds, but one of Chung's hand snakes forwards and grabs ahold of hers, the other holding the door open.

"Are you absolutely sure about this – you know there's no going back." Chung says quietly, his face now serious.

"Yes." Eve replies, without hesitation (Because she threw that hesitation away just before she stepped into the pod).

Chung releases her hand, but the hand on the door lingers. "Fine. Then I won't stop you. Just… just don't regret this later." He then releases the hand on the door as well.

Eve gives him a sad smile. "I won't be able to regret anymore." She then slams the door shut. He looks crestfallen and his mouth forms four words, the first being Eve's name, but Eve can't really tell what the others are (or maybe she just can't comprehend them). Green fluid starts filling up the chamber and Chung doesn't leave until after the liquid reaches the top and Eve's eyes close.

~2 Days Later~

"Code Battle Seraph installed." A metallic voice from the monitor announces, and Eve opens her eyes. She steps out of the chamber and a crown fizzes to life around her head, seemingly made out of electricity and glowing a soft blue. Her clothing has changed, now containing more black. Her movements are more elegant, though slightly robotic. She realises that she is hungry, so she walks of her room into a brightly lit corridor and heads down the stairs.

Smells meet her nose as she walks into the Kitchen of the small house the El-team (The name of the team led by Elsword) currently lives in.

"Eve!" Chung exclaims with a bright smile.

"Hello Chung." Eve replies in a monotone.

"So your emotions really were terminated." Chung states.

"Yes. Please hand me a plate."

Chung does as Eve asks, and Eve then loads some of the food that has been cooked onto the plate. Eve then notices that no one else is present.

"Where is the rest of the team?" She asks

"They went out on a quest. Should be back by tomorrow. We're to go after them if they aren't."

"Why aren't you with them?"

"I wanted to be here when you woke up."

"I did not need watching over. What you did was pointless and irrational."

"Do you know what day it is today?"

"Yes. It is Christmas day, celebrated by people all around the world on the 25th of December. Christians believe that-"

"Yes I know. But I guess you wouldn't really care anymore."

"Your assumption is correct. I will now go to my lab and work on updating Moby and Remy."

Eve has finished her meal and heads for her lab, but Chung's hand latches onto her sleeve, pulling her back.

"What are you trying to do?" Eve asks

"Just shut up and follow me."

"I have told you that I have work to do. Unhand me." Eve's command falls on deaf ears and Chung's hand does not budge. He drags her out of the house into the village, which was covered in a blanket of snow, and starts heading into the forest.

"I have important work to do! Unhand me!" Eve exclaims once more. Still, the hand does not budge.

"Unhand me!" Eve shouts again, and this time, a hand rises with her voice and slams into Chung's face.

"Look. I always used to listen to you. Could you come with me and hear me out just this once?" His face is suddenly unnaturally close to mine, his lips curled into an angry frown. In Eve's peripheral vision, words appear. (Cooling systems activated. Cheek areas unnaturally hot. Temperature still rising. Analysing error.)

"Fine. Just this once." Eve decides as she dismisses the message. She resolves to find the cause of the error later after she has completed whatever mundane task Chung has in store for her. "Will you tell me where you are taking me?"

"No. You'll have to see for yourself."

Soon, the two reach a cliff at the edge of the forest. Chung gestures for Eve to sit and, after she is seated, sits down himself.

"It should happen any second now."

As the sun sinks below the horizon, a brilliant array of lights begins to forms just above the horizon.

"It's awesome, isn't it?" Chung asks.

"It does look very nice." I admit. "Now I must return to my lab. Thank you for showing me this." I turn to get up, but Chung grabs my hand and pulls me back down.

"No. Don't go yet. The best part is still to come." (Best part? Wha- Eve begins to think)

The lights flare up and turn the most brilliant green as they dance across the horizon, moving in strange patterns. Soon, they begin to fade out.

"Thank you fo-" Eve begins again as she rises, before realising that she had been leaning into Chung's side as the lights danced and that her face is centimetres away from his. He is smiling and Eve's le(Error! Error! Error!)gs turn to jelly. She draws her face back and (Error! Error! Error!) sits down again, lest she falls over. 'Are…' she starts to think, 'are these… emotions? But I have deleted them!' (Error! Error! Er- Warnings have now been turned off.)

"I… kind of wanted to show you this while you were still using Electra," Chung says with a sheepish smile, "but… I guess this is meaningless to you now. I guess there is one other thing I want to say to you but I guess it's meaningless as well. Eve… I love you."

Eve just sits there and stares at him blankly. Inside her brain, however, a cyclone of information was crashing around, and something is breaking.

"Yeah, ok. That's all. You can go back to doing whatever you were about to do now…" Chung tacks on, oblivious to what was happening to Eve.

Eve continues to stare at him, until, finally, the crack inside the walls she had built around her emotions widens. The wall comes crashing down, unable to hold the emotions any longer.

Still oblivious, Chung waves a hand in front of Eve's face and says "Hello? Earth to Eve? Are you asleep or-"

He is cut off as Eve flings a hand around his neck and her mouth crashes into his. After a moment of surprise, Chung returns the kiss.

Eventually they break apart and Eve smiles shyly at Chung. "S-sorry I couldn't stop myself… a-and… well…" Eve's voice is no longer monotonous.

Chung grins openly at her, though his face is as red as Elsword's hair. "So you still had emotions after all."

"M-more like you helped me regain them…" Eve stutters, her face just as red as Chung's. They move to sit so their feet are hanging off the edge of the cliff. Eve leans against Chung, this time consciously. His hand slips around her waist.

"Thanks." She finally says.

Chung smirks. "Don't mention it."

The young couple sit there contentedly as the last rays of sunlight finally fades and gives way to the darkness of night.
