A/N: Honestly, this little ficcy came to me when I saw-yes, you guessed it- a dog hanging out a car window. I think I squealed: "That's it! Why the heck didn't I think of that sooner!?!"(in response, the rest of the people in the car stared at me like I'd forgotten to take my medication...haha)
People were staring.
The bus was packed; every seat was filled and the chatter so loud Kagome could barely hear her own thoughts. Maybe...just maybe, it was better that way.
Even with balancing her life between hunting youkai and school, not to mention trying to keep her sanity, Kagome didn't think that chaperoning her younger brother across the country was much help in those aspects. When she had asked why she had to be the one to pick Souta up from soccer camp in a remote town up north, she had been faced with explanations that a shrewder person would have found to be dry excuses.
But here she was...being the helpful older sister. Taut as a guitar string ready to snap and blushing so forcefully her blood felt as if it were boiling. But then again, Inuyasha usually caused that type of effect on her. The other travelers on board were craning their necks to better catch a glimpse of him, whispering and giggling with curiosity and amazement unveiled.
Hell, Kagome whimpered in her mind, who on earth wouldn't stare?
Strange as it was to see him without his fire-rat haori and hakama, the rather small t-shirt and old, torn jeans complimented his lean physique well. Too well. Wind from the open window whipped the long strands of his hair into brilliant tangled webs of silver and the two white ears perched atop his head were hidden by a bulky toque...He looked like some rangy, supernatural god trying-but failing-to masquerade among the ordinary.
And why Inuyasha had insisted on accompanying her was a mystery...but glancing at him now, Kagome could easily detect a key clue.
As soon as her eyes landed on him, he turned from his fascination with the scenery whizzing past and stunned her with a devilish smirk, his eyes brightening when all the blood drained from her cheeks. She might have heard a cocky snicker, but she couldn't be sure; a white fang flashed momentarily and he did something to finally bring her mortification to its frightful peak.
He stuck his head out the window.
Oh, yes, she was sure of it now, he had come for one reason alone: to embarrass her to death. And so far, his mission was progressing very well.
Souta, grinning happily in the seat beside her, laughed, looking from the hanyou drooling into the wind, to the gawking passengers surrounding them. "He really is just like a dog, Kagome!"
"Yeah...you're right about that," she mumbled, sinking deeper into her seat. "Now all he needs is a tail and a long, lolling tongue..." Braving another glance at Inuyasha, her heart nearly imploded in her chest. Head still thrust out the window, he was looking in at her, grinning in a way that was as good as his wicked nature could get.
Unable to stop herself, she smiled back.
