Based upon the stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Edgar Allan Poe

Set after the fifth Harry Potter book

It was nothing but a symbol to Harry as he remembered it fully in his mind. The black cloth had appeared so dark and unknown as one of the few people that he had truly cared about fell into its depths. Beyond that veil was nothing but death and sin. It was there to show the evil that was found within the human heart. Now Harry understood that.

Slowly he took a small piece of black cloth and tied it around his face. The only things that were still visible were his pale lips and dark raven hair. If the cloth would have been removed the entire world would have seen the tears that fell from this teenage boy's face. Instead the veil caught each drop of moisture and held them tight within its grasp. The veil didn't let anything out.

As Harry's eyes scanned the small room, everything suddenly looked different. Blackness filled his thoughts and desires. No longer did he see the world with the beauty that it once had been filled with. It was the veil that had changed his views on life.

He looked out his window and into the unknown of the night. Suddenly everything seemed more lonely than he was used to. Sirius hadn't been around much at the beginning but they had finally found ways to communicate with each other. They had finally become a family.

Quickly he turned and threw Sirius's prized mirror hard into the opposite wall. He could feel his chest heave up and down as anger overcame him. He was mad at the world for taking away the only family member that he truly had left. He wanted Bellatrix to pay for the pain that he was feeling now. He wanted all the Death Eater's to pay.

As his breathing became normal once more he could hear a light tapping at his window. He turned and expected to see Hedwig but instead saw a dark, black raven. He walked slowly over to the animal and stared at it in a curious gaze. He reached out to touch it but it flapped its wings and took flight. As it departed the words it spoke were clear.

"Nevermore."

Harry fell onto the floor and began crying once more because he knew that the bird was right. Never again would he see Sirius, neither in this lifetime or in Heaven. He was forever cursed to be alone and to watch as each one of his precious friends died.

"I hate this!" He cried to the never-ending silence. He could hear the bird's mocking call echo throughout this thoughts. He tried to push them away but all he could hear was that one quiet word.

Admitting his defeat, Harry pulled himself into a tight ball on the cold floor and slowly cried himself into a sleep full of the nightmares of his dark world.
