A/N: My second Heroes/4400 crossover. Set quite a while in the future for Heroes and in 4400's alternate past – the timeline before the 4400 were abducted. (Please, just roll with any mind-boggling inconsistencies related to the universe-twisting in the 4400 fandom.) Minor spoiler for Heroes' "Four Months Later" (it concerns a non-major character). Written because I was encouraged to write more Heroes/4400 and because these two so needed to meet.

Alchemy

He had used to be in prison, though he'd never told Kevin precisely what for. They had met at the institution, after the other man had been moved there instead, and hadn't exactly been the best of friends.

But here they were, crossing paths again.

And now Kevin needed his help.

He hated that, but what could he do? The world was dying; this wasn't the time for years-old first impressions and petty grudges to build fences between two people – maybe the only two people – who could change it.

So Kevin steeled himself and looked across the table again at his old acquaintance. "Things are changing," he said seriously. "Everyone knows it's happening, evolution trying to save us. But it's not happening fast enough."

A nod, acknowledgement of the truth of their grim future.

"If we could find out how it works, maybe we could… help it along. Fix this. If… if we had the money."

Kevin groaned inwardly at the plea in his voice.

There was silence, so he made eye contact slowly, hopefully.

And Midas – Kevin had nearly forgotten the man's real name, he had known him so long under the nickname – smiled. "Maybe we could," he said.
