Ellis stared outside the bars that led to the swamp in front of them, everyone had grown quiet. Not sure what to say, Janice was on the other side of the cylinder shaped safe house. She was peeling off the skin of a stick she had found and was ignoring the awkward silence, Ellis shifted in his stance about to leave the door when a small bright glow appeared.
It floated freely, as thought wind was carrying it to safety. He squinted at the small light and soon realized there were more, one landed on his nose. "A firefly." He whispered catching everyone's attention, "What young'un?" Coach asked unsure whether he heard right.
"It's a firefly y'all." He talked a little louder; Janice slowly got up and joined him. Nick and the others soon followed, ignoring the groaning and growling of zombies. Staring at the most beautiful thing they had ever seen since the beginning of all this.
Smiles were pasted onto their faces, "Guess we ain't the only survivors left." Janice mumbled giggling quietly at her joke. "Yeah, I always thought they were kind of annoying but now…It feels like a Christmas present." Nick agreed, the whole group nodded in agreement holding some of them in their sweaty palms.
Admiring them, Ellis glanced at Janice. She had let hers go. "Be free; don't wanna cage you up like we are." Janice commented watching the glow disappear into the sky, Ellis wrapped an arm around Janice's shoulder. Kissing her cheek then pulling her close.
Janice smiled at Ellis, wrapping her arms around his waist and pulling him even closer. Ellis' cheeks grew darker and so did Janice's. "Don't worry Jan. We'll be free soon. I promise."
