A Summer Afternoon By Melinda Roberts
Mindy sat under her favourite tree, reading her favourite book, with her best friend. She enjoyed these summer afternoons, free from school, free from stress. She was at peace. After her memories of Winter, she loved summer more and more. Mindy wasn't too fussed about being in the sun, or having flashbacks, even though they sometimes drove her to psychotic rampages through Domino. As you may be able to tell, she was a little bit insane.
"Jordy, I'm bored." She muttered slowly.
"Then go do something," Jordy replied lazily.
"But what to do?" Mindy recited from her book. "Or what, my fair lady, what to do?"
"That was the lamest thing ever." Jordy said, still looking tired.
"No, it was dramatic." Mindy laughed.
They walked along until they came to a little tiny trickle of a stream, and ran through it. Oh, what do to on a summer afternoon?
"Joey, what can we do?" Apricot, or Anzu, as we call her, muttered loudly.
"We can't do nothin' 'til we find a beach." The sandy haired boy called back.
"You won't find one, guys." Mindy yelled, walking out of a blackberry bush.
"Yeah, you won't find one!" Jordy called, still struggling against the bush.
"Oh really?" Joey challenged.
"Yeah, really. I've lived around here for nearly," she counted on her fingers. "Five years."
"Oh, darn." Joey said sarcastically.
Mindy rolled her eyes. She was used to this ,this sarcasm, this attitude, it happened to so many pig-headed idiots, so much so that they got so lost they couldn't be found for months. But it was their choice to be brats.
"Don't get lost now, or I'll have to call the police." She called, in mock worry. She walked back to her soft spot of grass under her tree. She was once again at peace. Until that one little insect flew onto her nose.
"Get off, you stupid bee." She said angrily.
It wouldn't budge.
"I said get off." She repeated. It still didn't move.
"GET. OFF. NOW." She yelled, swatting it with her arms flailing. It stung her.
"Darn." Jordy smirked.
"Shut up." Mindy shouted.
She stalked off angrily. Today was definitely not her day.
"Blah blah blah." She said to herself. "That's all people care about."
In her rage, she bumped into either a tree or a boy. A very tall, muscled boy.
"Sorry." They called to each other, at exactly the same time.
"Jinx." Mindy smirked.
"Oh no." The boy said sarcastically.
"Great." Mindy smiled. "Another sarcasm nut."
The boy, she guessed, was part albino. It was weird for him to be out in the sun. But oh well, she didn't care.
Mindy walked away, not at all bothered. She was actually calm. She found another tree and read her book, all was at peace. Until she saw the boy again.
"What do you want?" she snapped.
"Nothing really, I was just wandering." He said sharply.
"Well, in that case go away. I'm reading here." Mindy sneered angrily.
"Whatever." He said, walking off.
"I'm glad I'm alone again." Mindy said proudly.
She continued reading her book, but this time no one disturbed her aura of peace and tranquillity.
