Richard Castle was sleeping famously next to his fiancé Kate Beckett. He was dreaming of Cannel and Peterson reviewing Frozen Heat like it was the most amazing thing on the planet, when he heard the doorbell. 'Who could that be?' he thought as he awoke doing his best to leave the woman next to him just the way she was. When he reached the door and pulled it open the last person he expected to see was Captain Victoria Gates. "Captain? What can I do for you?" he asked with a puzzled look on his face. "Mr. Castle, is Detective Beckett with you?" nodding he replied still quite puzzled "can I ask what this is about sir? Is something wrong?" she sighed, "I think you should get Detective Beckett" without another word he turned and walked through the office past all the pictures of him and his family and into the bedroom. "Kate, wake up honey" she rolled over and rubbed the sleep from her eyes "What time is it?" looking over at the clock on her bedside table "Rick its 4:00 in the morning what is this about?" "Captain Gates is here, says she needs to talk to me and that you should be there" before he could even blink she was out of the bed and headed towards the living room. "Captain, what can I do for you?" "Detective, Mr. Castle please take a seat" once they were seated on the couch with the Captain in Castle's chair she spoke "I'm afraid I have some bad news" Kate's heart began to pound, Castle took her hand and held it like her life depended on it "what's going on?" Kate asked. "There's been an accident" Kate gasped "are Ryan and Esposito and Lanie ok?" "Of course, there all fine" "than what's going on?" asked Castle. "I'm sorry Mr. Castle but your mother was involved in a hit and run on Broadway this evening" he knew she was still talking but he stopped listening after hit and run. He looked over and Kate and saw that she had tears in her eyes. Without thinking he crumpled into her arms and held on like his whole life depended on it. He didn't know what else to do.
