THE CHANGING FACE OF SUPERHEROISM

AN EDITORIAL BY MALCOM WILKINS

Gone it seems are the days of solitary caped crusaders, going it alone against the forces of evil. Gone even are the days of the hero and his sidekick, or to be politically correct, "Hero Support".

Once upon a time, Superheroes worked alone, or with the questionable aid of a sidekick. A sidekick is a word which here means: target, decoy, hostage, comic relief, go-fer, bitch, or even scapegoat. They were the unsung, un-thanked, unappreciated second-class citizens of the Superhero world.

Why would anyone be a sidekick you ask? Ask a black man in the 1960's why they put up with it. Ask a peasant in the middle ages why be a peasant. Most would tell you that it was simply the way it was, and that there was nothing they could do about it.

But then someone came along and did something about it. Men like Martin Luther King, or…whoever ended the nobility/peasant class system. (I'm a seer not a historian)

Well last year the son of The Commander and Jetstream, Will Stronghold (now a sophomore here at Sky High) became that man for the Sidekicks of the world.

I myself was placed in the "Hero Support" curriculum upon my arrival at Sky High nearly four years ago. My prophetic abilities, while useful, did not quite place me in the Hero category. Much like Mr. Medulla and Royal Pain (during her first four years at this school) my abilities were more along the lines of giving advice or building weapons for the Heroes to use.

But the events of last year's homecoming, and the combined talents and powers of Will, Layla, Magenta, "Popsicle", Warren Peace, and Zach "Attack" (not to mention former bus driver Ron White) changed the face of Super heroism forever.

The day of the Super-team has dawned, and while many Heroes can and do perform quite well on their own, the pooling talent has proven to be twice as effective against apocalypses (apocali? Apocalypsies? (I'm a prophet not a grammarian))

I saw it coming of course, but kept my mouth shut. Many fear change and might not have welcomed the news that their privileged place in Superhero society was going to go away. In the wake of the wave of change, the Hero/Sidekick system has been replaced by classes in teamwork, and combining powers.

And I say, it's about time.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've Super team applications to fill out. (I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the JLA)
