There was a woman standing in front of the Mouri detective agency when Ran opened the door. It was late, at least ten at night. She was around the same age as Ran with short brown hair framing her expressionless face.

"Mouri-san" she said abruptly "I have some bad news." Ran stared at her dread pooled in her stomach. "It's best if we talk inside."

Ran mutely held the door open wider. The woman walked past her and seated herself on the couch. She waited for Ran to sit down before continuing.

"My name is Miyano Shiho. It is vitally important that you tell no one of this name, it would put you in great danger." She fixed Ran with a serious look.

"I've come to inform you of the death of Kudo Shinichi"

Ran felt the wourld drop out from under her but before she could open her mouth to deny it, deny her, Miyano continued. "Two years ago while he was with you at tropical land he observed a suspicious exchange between two individuals. He was found and poisoned. The poison was ineffective it didn't kill him, however there were extreme side effects. He was able to take a temporary antidote from time to time, but we discovered too late that they actually made the condition worse. Three days ago he slipped into a coma, he died this morning."

She fixed Ran with that same piercing look, "If anyone asks he disappeared, you haven't heard from him."

Ran felt as if Miyano's words were coming from far away, they barely penetrated the haze that filled her mind. Her mouth wouldn't move and she distantly realized she was in shock but the importance of Miyano's words made an impression and she managed to nod.

Miyano got up to leave, "Don't look into his death, he wouldn't have wanted you to wind up dead. If it's an emergency you can contact me on his phone, I can't guarantee I'll pick up." She hesitated at the door giving Ran an almost sympathetic look. "I'm sorry for your loss, he cared for you very much." Then she was gone and Ran was alone.
