It's raining again.
The sky's dark and gloomy.
Like her mood.
She can sense more than hear Logan's arrival, but she doesn't
move from her position by the window. It's therapeutic to just
sit and listen to the steady rhythms of the rain hitting against
the glass.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"A penny."
"Huh?"
"A penny for your thoughts."
"It's only worth that much?"
"Afraid so."
She doesn't comment, just stares out the window.
"What to talk about it?"
"We've spent half of our lives trying to stay out of that hell
hole and Tinga ends up going back just because she wanted to
love and be loved. It's just not fair."
"I know."
"She just wanted a normal life."
"And she got that for a little while."
She shouldn't have to settle for a little while. "This is the
bit where you tell me that *It's better to have loved than to
have never loved at all,* right?"
"Don't tell me you agree with Zack about family not being an
option." She turns back to watch the rain. The weather has
gotten worse. Hard pebbles of rain hits the glass with stronger
force.
"I didn't at first, but after some thinking, I realize he has a
point. If any of us settle down and have a family, we put
innocent people at risk." How many times has she put her own
friends at risk? How long until someone close to her dies for
it? "How can we do that knowing that Lydecker is out there
waiting for a chance to use that to his advantage?"
"So what are you going to do? Run for the rest of your life?
You can't run from your past. It will always catch up to you."
She knows he's right. She thinks that's what Zack and the
others have been trying to do, but they can't leave the past
behind.
She can't either.
"I know. I think I needed someone to remind me of that."
She thinks back to her conversation with Tinga about her husband
not accepting her for what she is. Logan's never treated her
like a freak. To him she's just as regular as everyone else and
it makes her feel special. Maybe that's what love is. She
doesn't know for sure. But before her feelings begin to show,
she gets up abruptly. "Gotta blaze." She walks away, but stops
before she reaches the door and turns towards Logan. "Thanks."
"For what?"
"For sticking by me, being my friend...for everything."
"Anytime."
She walks away with a renewed strength. She will not hide
cowardly in the shadows. She will fight and maybe someday she
will have the kind of normal life Tinga spoke of.
Maybe.
