-How the Moon Came to Be-
It was a quiet day in FeatherClan. The hunting patrol had just come back carrying fat juicy squirrels and mice. Some warriors were sharing tongues in the shade beside the warriors den. The clan elder was dozing in the sun beside the elders den. Suddenly, three fluffy kit streaked out of the nursery and over to the elder.
"Fernbreeze! Fernbreeze!" Briarkit meowed.
Fernbreeze opened her leaf green eyes. "What do you three want?" Fernbreeze asked.
"Can you tell us a story?" said Snowkit.
The elder nodded. "Which story do you want to hear?"
"The one about the moon," squeaked a tiny black tom named Nightkit.
Fernbreeze nodded again and began the story. "A long time ago in a forest far, far away, even before StarClan walked in Silverpelt, there were two wolves."
"What are wolves?" Snowkit interrupted.
"Wolves are like dogs but a whole lot bigger." said Briarkit. "Right, Fernbreeze?"
"Yes, wolves are like gigantic dogs." Fernbreeze began the story again, "One of the wolves was as black as the darkest night. He roamed for many, many seasons by himself without another wolf to keep him company. He didn't mind being alone for he had been kicked out of his pack many, many seasons before."
"Why was the black wolf kicked out of his pack?" asked Nightkit.
"I don't know, little one," meowed Fernbreeze. "One day, he came across a she-wolf in a small green grassy meadow in the middle of a dark forest. This was the most beautiful she-wolf he had ever seen. She had thick silvery white fur that shone like pure silver in the sun. Her eyes were the prettiest of blues and in her right eye there was a tiny sliver of silver."
"She sounds really pretty!" said Briarkit in awe.
Fernbreeze smiled. "The two wolves stayed together for a long time. They hunted day after day together in the forest. Then, one day the she-wolf grew very ill. After a few days the silver wolf died. The black wolf was overcome with grief. He howled for days and days on end. Then one night something bright appeared in the sky with the stars. The new object in the sky was a disk the same silvery color of the she-wolf's fur. The black wolf soon realized that the silver she-wolf had never left him and that he wasn't alone."
"That was a good story," meowed Snowkit.
"Shhhhh! It's not over yet!" said Briarkit.
"The she-wolf had only changed forms. She now watched over him every night. And every time when the moon was at its brightest and fullest the black wolf would howl. Pouring his heart out to the moon." Fernbreeze finished.
"Wow." meowed Nightkit, "That was a great story!"
Snowkit nodded in agreement. "I liked it, too!"
"Can you tell us another story?" asked Briarkit.
Fernbreeze laughed. "Not now," she purred, "maybe tomorrow."
"Oh. Okay." said Briarkit.
"Come on!" meowed Snowkit, "Let's go play moss ball!"
"Okay!" Nightkit said.
"Bye Fernbreeze," whispered Briarkit.
Fernbreeze didn't answer. The elder had already fallen back asleep.
