"Mama, do you remember when?"
Little Grace would say
When You told Papa I was coming
Around blooming buds of May
Then the times that I would cry
all throughout the night
Both of you, with sleep in your eyes
would rock and hold me tight?
Remember that time when I turned four
and thought I could climb a tree
Papa came up quick to the rescue
and he got stuck with me!
That time when I lost my very first tooth
Papa said a fairy would come
Then you woke me up by accident
(But I knew it was you all along, Mum)
Remember that time when I couldn't sleep?
Just reading a story wouldn't do
Papa became a scary dragon!
But I was protected by you
And how about for Papa's birthday?
When we celebrated for his sake
Made him wear a paper crown
And baked a funny lopsided cake
Or every time Christmas came around
With snow right to our knees
And Papa would hold me up
to put the star upon the tree
But most of all, I really liked when
We just sat and sipped our tea
In the garden with those tiny chairs
And my family close to m—
And that's when Alice would open her eyes
With tears upon her face
Another dream, to which she would answer
"No. I don't remember, Grace."
Because no matter how hard you try or fight
Anything just to recall,
You simply can't remember something
That never happened at all.
