James and I sat down at a table near the back of the restaurant. It was July, and we had graduated from Hogwarts just a few months earlier. We, along with the rest of the Marauders and a few of my friends, had joined the Order as soon as we left school.

Earlier tonight, James had claimed he had something important he needed to talk to me about. Apparently it was something so important we had to go to a Muggle five-star restaurant. The fact that it was Muggle is interesting because James hates Muggle restaurants as you have to use Muggle money, but I love them. He would only go to one if it were important. Like the thing he has to talk to me about. I knew he wasn't breaking up with me, not after chasing me for a gazillion years, but still, you never know. I couldn't help but worry.

"What are you having Lily?" James asked me, breaking into my thoughts.

"Erm…I actually don't know yet," I admitted. I actually hadn't even looked at the menu yet.

"Do you want to share something?" he offered. "I'm not that hungry."

"Sure, what do you want? I don't really care."

"How about the steak?" James suggested.

"Okay, that sounds good," I replied, setting my menu down. James mirrored me, placing his menu on top of mine. Just then, the waitress appeared. She smiled flirtatiously at James and I rolled my eyes. This happened every time James and I went out to dinner. Our waitress was young, blond, and perky and she would smile at James the whole time and completely ignore me. Yes, I knew he was good-looking, but honestly. Couldn't they see he had a girlfriend?

"What would you like?" she asked James, not sparing a glance in my direction.

"We'll share the steak," James said, deliberately gesturing towards me. I had to smile as the waitress turned and glared at me before scribbling our order on her pad and stalking away. I laughed, shaking my head.

"The look on her face," I chortled. "Like she wanted to murder me. Merlin James, why are you so handsome. Not that I mind of course," I said playfully. I expected him to reply with his usual bantering remark, but instead he was silent, staring off into space as if he hadn't heard me at all.

"James? James, are you okay?" I waved my hand in front of his face.

"Huh, what? Oh, sorry Lily, I didn't catch that," James murmured. I stared at him. What was wrong with him? He seemed nervous, fidgeting uncomfortably. Oh no. What if he was breaking up with me? That was the only reason I could think of for him acting this odd.

"I just-James, what's up? You're acting weirdly. Is everything okay?" I asked, mentally praying he wasn't going to break up with me. He looked at me seriously, as if trying to decide something. He seemed to come to a decision.

"Actually Lily, there's something I have to ask you," he said nervously. Ask me something? Huh. Maybe he wasn't breaking up with me. You don't aske someone if you can break up with them. You just do it.

"Does this have anything to do with why we're here?" I demanded. James nodded.

"It's the reason," he replied.

"Well then, shoot." James took a breath, then started to get up.

"James, what are you-" I broke off. He was getting down on one knee, reaching into his pocket. I gasped, my hand flying to my mouth. He withdrew a small box and held it up.

"Lily Evans, I am in love with you. Will you marry me?" James asked, opening the box to reveal a sparkling diamond ring.

"Oh!" I cried. "Oh James! Yes! Of course I'll marry you!" I threw my arms around him, beaming wildly. I pulled back and he slipped the ring on my finger. It fit perfectly, sparkling up at me.

"I love you so much," I whispered, wrapping my arms around him again.

"I love you too," James answered, squeezing me tightly.
