Boomerang
Sokka always comes back.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Sokka was three years old, he wandered out of the village and out into the wilderness. The warriors searched for him across the barren wasteland for three days, but all the found was a single boot. Sokka's mother, father, and young sister were distraught at the loss of their son and brother.
But two days later, Sokka was found at the edge of the village, exhausted and missing a shoe, but otherwise fine. His family rejoiced at his return from presumed death. And on that day his family learned that no matter what, Sokka always comes back.
And when Sokka was 9, he ran away from home after an argument with Katara. His parents checked his friends' houses and any other place he might be, but he was nowhere to be found.
At dinner that night, Sokka was there in his usual spot, cutting the meat with his dagger. An eight-year-old Katara cried and hugged her brother, thanking every sprit she could remember the name of that her brother had come back.
When Sokka was 13, his father left for war. Sokka begged and pleaded for his father to take him with him, but to no avail. Katara and his mother feared they would never see the man again, but Sokka had faith that his father would come back.
The night before he left, Sokka's father gave him his boomerang, with a promise that like a boomerang, he would one day come back.
At 15, Sokka left his homeland with Katara and Aang. The smaller kids wanted to go with them, especially a small boy named Nibori. Sokka refused, and left the boy a small boomerang that he'd made one afternoon, and promised to come back home.
One year later, Sokka returned to the North Pole and sat in the Garden of the Sprits and cried. He stayed in the North for three years, doing everything and nothing for the village there in the name of Yue-in the name of the Moon Sprit. But his teammates did not worry about him. They did not fret when yet another letter came, stating, "Hey, I'm gonna stay another year." They did not fear he would stay forever in the North, never again returning to the South.
At 19 years of age, Sokka returned to the South Pole. He never spoke of his stay in the North, but his family and almost-family understood he had made amends with Yue. When he came home, Suki came as well.
They had three children together: Li, Nibori, and Yue. For the birth of each child, Sokka created a boomerang and hung it above the mantle of their home.
When the oldest, Li, left home, he was 12 years of age. The boy went to visit the North Pole and stand in the Garden of the Sprits and breathe in the air his father before him had breathed in many years ago. A 32-year-old Sokka did not worry while his wife fretted endlessly.
When Nibori left two years later, he traveled to the Earth Kingdom to stay and study with his mother and father's old friend, Lady Bei Fong. His parents had both learned not to worry by now.
Yue turned 12 a year later, and left home just as he brothers had before her. She made way for Ba Sing Se to study herbal healing, as none of the three had been gifted with the art of bending.
Sokka's children did not come back.
10 years after his daughter left home, on the day of the death of a certain Sprit, Sokka disappeared. Katara, Aang, Suki, and Toph searched without end for him, fearing that he would never come home again.
He did.
Because Sokka is like a boomerang. Sokka always comes back.
