Journal of the Third Undersecretary, 526 N.U.S.
I had to help Starswirl talk to the fillies today. Of course, he was far too busy to actually show up, the pompous mule. Not that I cared much-the story we were to read was the same as the one I heard when I was a colt, so I doubt any of them found it very interesting. Since I didn't remember it the first time, I doubt Future Me will either, so I've taken the liberty of recording it here:
The Tale of the Two Sisters
As all unicorns know, our world was built by the great and powerful Creator, whose name is written in the earth and the stars and the sea. As it matured, the Creator grew bored with our world; no life walked its rocky plains, and no sun or moon shone in the sky, just stars. So he cast the seeds of his self out upon the land so we could all grow. And as his finest creation he molded the Alicorns from cloud-wisps and shining gems, so that they could walked his world and preserve all that lay upon it.
For a time, all was well. The plants and the animals grew and flourished, and the Alicorns watched over them all, always acting with kindness and goodwill. The Creator, however, was still unhappy with his work. He felt that it was missing variety, and the sky was filled with only stars. So he left his final gift: two great beings named Celestia and Luna, whose could raise his sun and moon for him, as he was weary from his great works. But with these goddesses came a terrible curse.
The Creator was not alone in his cosmic palace, there was another there, Discord, who sought to usurp his power and create a new world of chaos. The Creator was hard pressed to fight his evil, and so he did not notice as some Alicorns lost their wings, and became the wise race of unicorns, and others lost their horns and became the nimble pegasi. Still others came from the pegasi and unicorns and what the lost in speed and beauty they gained in skill and strength. It came to be that Celestia and Luna ruled the Earth ponies from the Castle of Two Sisters.
Eventually the Creator lost his power, and Discord came to the land that the two goddesses ruled, by this time known as Equestria. He overpowered them easily and took control, and so the Great Tragedy began. The story of Discord's defeat is far too long to be told in a single reading, but after he was imprisoned in stone and sealed away in our city of Canterlot, a strange pall fell over the land. Mists and gray clouds filled the air, and the earth was black and putrid underfoot. The two goddesses vanished into the fog, and the world healed. Now we wait for them to return as the sages predict they will, ruled by a King or Queen-in-Lieu.
A rather unsatisfying conclusion, I'd say. Then again, there might be a reason why Undersecretaries aren't assigned to educate the fillies.
Day 122-526 N.U.S

Campaign Log of General Aquila, 493 QULN
Our operation in the western theatre was a success, though with more losses than anticipated. Our forces will need reinforcement if we are to punch through enemy lines and gain access to the Magna Calca region. I have written to the Empress requesting 3 more legions of flying spears; they provide only means of overpowering the enemy's magic.
The courier has just returned; my sister refuses to devote any more of her pegasi to the fight. She writes that we can easily destroy the unicorns without flying spears. I know this; our losses would be tremendous were we to try this tactic. Why can't she see the plow she has affixed on my back-we cannot fight if our men think they are marching to their doom!
Nevermind it now. Scouts have just informed me that there are three villages of lithoponies within an hours flight. We can afford to throw them at the enemy.
