Disclamer: do not own blablabla
"Damn that Edward!" Winry cussed out loud as she angrily marched her way to the station. "I know my last repairs had a slight.. mistake... BUT STILL! He goes and gets himself into trouble all the freaking time!"
She had been called to central to do repairs on Ed's automail only to find him hospitalised. Of course she was shocked and angry. He wouldn't even tell her what happened.
When she arrived at the station, Winry parked herself on the nearest bench seat in a huff. The clang of her metal tool box hitting the pavement echoed through the station, but she paid it no mind, she was too mad to care about the startled expressions of the passers by.
The girl crossed her arms as she glared at the insides of her closed eyelids. Stupid Ed. And stupid Al for letting Ed be stupid.
Stupid boys.
Though as she spewed a few curses under her breath, she remembered the words their mutual friend Hughes had said.
"You know these boys Winry. Its possible they thought you'd understand without saying anything."
"In general men prefer to let their actions speak instead of words."
Yeah Ed used actions alright. Stupid dangerous actions that ruined her perfect automail!
Winry sighed as she let her shoulders sag, he was right; The Elrics had always been like that, she shouldn't expect any different. There was no point being angry, it was stupid, almost as stupid as the boys. Tucking a lock of hair behind her ear she scanned her eyes over her surroundings, pausing on the big clock on a nearby wall.
CRAP!
She was early, way too early. She had been so busy being mad, she had stormed her way there an hour earlier than the time they were suppose to meet up. Plus an additional fifteen minutes before the train left. Crap! What was she going to do until the train got there?
Sinking down into her seat in a rather un-ladylike fashion, Winry internally groaned. She had been ranting about how Ed and Al were stupid; how hypocritical of her. Leaning forwards she pulled her metal toolbox onto the seat beside her. She figured she might as well do something useful while she waited. Pulling out a rag she started polishing her tools, cleaning off dirt, oil and curiously what looked like dried blood on her favourite wrench... huh... weird...
When she moved onto her fourth spanner she heard a curious noise. It sounded like creaking machine parts. Like Ed's automail after he's gone and done something stupid. With a sigh, Winry returned her rag and tool back to the red case and closed it.
"Goddamn it Ed!" She growled not even looking in the direction of the sound. Yeah, it was definitely broken automail, she knew that sound better than anything. "I leave you alone for half a day and you've already messed up my beautiful creation! Why should I even fix it if you are only going to mess it up?" When she received no response the girl looked up angrily, only to see no one there. Huh? She was sure she heard it. So where did it come from? Or more importantly, where did it go?
Suddenly she was startled by something touching her leg, the creaking noises coming from by her feet.
"ED What are you-?" lifting her feet from the ground, she peered over the side of the chair only to find, not an Edward, but a feline face peering back up at her.
Ah. It was a cat... Wait, a cat with automail?! She knew dogs could have automail, her own dog Den has a prosthetic leg. But as far as she knew cats usually don't cope with metal limbs... Something about grooming.
And yet at her feet Winry had a scraggly, prosthetically-supported cat, purring away like an old rattly engine.
"Hello there kitty," she reached down and scratched the cat behind the ear, a gesture that the feline appreciated, and showed it by increasing the volume of it's throaty rumble. "You probably shouldn't be hanging around the station, it's dangerous."
As she pet the animal, her eyes strayed to its back leg. Sure enough it was automail... and in a bad shape. Looking up at the clock again she found she still had an hour spare. It couldn't hurt to help a poor kitty right?.
With her mind made up, she stood up and reached down to pick up the feline, only to have it scamper off into the shadows. Well that was successful. Not. Sighing again, Winry sat back down. She didn't have the correct parts to repair feline automail anyway. The best she could do was oil and polish. Maybe replace a few small cogs and screws. Oh well.
As she reached for her toolbox to resume her cleaning, she noticed the cat on the edge of the station staring at her with a tilted head. When she looked up at it, the critter mewed and rubbed itself on a nearby pillar, purring so loud that she could hear it from her seat.
Hmm. Maybe it did want help after all? Once again Winry got to her feet. This time she slowly approached the cat, clicking her fingers and letting out a few lines of 'here kitty kitty' as she went. The cat seemed to adore the attention, it rolled on its back and wriggled. Its raspy purring kicking up dust from the floor making it cough. But it didn't seem to mind.
Just when Winry was a few metres, away the cat seemed to get startled and jumped to its feet, staring off into the dark. With a meow and a twitch of an ear, it started to limp away into the shadows, completely ignoring the nearby confused girl.
"Do you want help or not?!" The girl growled as she clenched her fists at her side, "I see why people don't put automail on cats! They are unappreciative little creatures... JUST LIKE EDWARD!"
Amused by her joke couldn't help but smile, if Ed heard that he would have had a fit. She turned and headed back to her seat with a small smile. But that smile quickly fell when she heard a feline screech behind her. Oh god, it sounded like it was hurt! Damn, its damaged automail probably pulled on a nerve and hurt it. Without hesitation the girl rushed off into the dark searching for the poor creature.
It was dark, why didn't this part of the station have lights? Winry had a flashlight back in her tool box, she considered going back to retrieve it but decided against it when she heard the kitty crying near by.
"Shh shh, it's okay kitty I'm here." She squinted as she waited for her eyes adjust. Slowly she made out the cowering form of the small animal and reached towards it. But immediately the cat arched it back and hissed staring at her, or past her. Actually for all she knew it was facing the other way, it was dark after all.
And then it got darker... as a bag was shoved over her head.
crap crap crap CRAP CRAP! THEY WERE LATE!
Winry had specifically told Ed that they should get to the station fifteen minutes before the train leaves. Usually he wouldn't care about being early and risk it. But this time if he was late, he was sure to get a wrench shaped dint in his head. The last time he got whacked the crazy woman actually hit hard enough to draw blood!. Nu-uh! He didn't want to die, he had to HURRRYYYYY!
CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP
A few minutes of three, mad dashing metal feet later; the boys arrived at the station. And just on time. After catching his breath, Ed knocked a fist on the metal chest of his brother.
"Good job Al, you actually managed to keep up with me." He grinned up boastingly, at his younger sibling.
"Don't be silly Brother," Al sighed as he took his brother's suitcase and swung it onto his back, "I was ahead of you most of the way. I had to slow down and let you catch up."
"Y-yeah whatever." Ed grumbled as straightened out an invisible fold in his red coat, "Come on let's go find Winry."
As they approached the platform they both scanned the small crowd.
"Do ya see her Al?" Edward grunted as he stretched up on his tiptoes trying to spot the girl. Doing his little "trying to see what tall people can see" dance, that Al always found amusing. But this time the metal boy was too preoccupied with concern, to be entertained by his brother's antics.
"No I can't see her anywhere," the metal suit responded, worry lacing his voice, "Maybe she got lost and went to the wrong platform!"
"Nah," Ed sighed as he scratched his head, grudgingly giving up on attempting to see by normal means, "it's the same platform she arrived on. She's probably just late." Ed angrily stalked over to the closest bench and climbed onto it. With his new found height he scanned the crowd with a scowl. "Stupid woman! Making us rush here early, threaten us with bodily injury if we are late, only to be late herself. What a hypocritical bitc-"
"Brother!" Al scolded his older brother, his disapproving tone echoing through his armour. "Don't be so rude! Don't forget that Winry travelled all the way here to fix your automail!"
"Yeah, yeah I know." Ed mumbled as he jumped down from his makeshift step stool. Ed glared enviously at his metal brother, who still managed to tower over him even while he was standing on the chair. "But she's still a bitc- mean person! She always hits me with her stupid wrench, which she wouldn't have even been able to buy without my patronage! Stupid automail freak should be more appreciative of - Oof!" The boy's words were cut short as his face hit the pavement.
"Brother are you okay?" The echoing voice of Al barely registered in Ed's mind, it was all but drowned out by throbbing pain.
"I'm fine Al." The boy sat up and rubbed his forehead. "I just tripped on that toolbox over the-" His voice died out when he rest his eyes on the long red container.
That was Winry's toolbox! It definitely was hers! Why was it here but not her? A cold feeling of dread filled the boy as he jumped to his feet.
"WINRY! Where are you!" Ed called out as he jumped back up onto the seat. Dammit where could the girl have gone? "Winry!" He yelled louder. Ignoring the sting in the back of his throat he yelled as loud as he could.
"Maybe she went to the bathroom?" Al suggested with a shaky voice. "Or maybe- maybe she uh... Maybe she went back to get something. Maybe it's not her toolbox."
"Yeah maybe," Ed responded with a now croaky voice, "how 'bout we check and make sure, 'kay?"
With a whimper Al nodded his head and watched his brother approach. Ed patted the armour suit on the chest on his way past, ideally he would pat his head but that was impossible.
"Hello, Mrs Hughes." Ed spoke into the payphone as calmly as possible. "Sorry to randomly call you, but is Winry there?"
"No Ed, she left over an hour ago," the woman responded concerned, "Why? Is something wrong? Is she not at the station with you?"
"Uh, we don't know where she is at the moment, that's why we called you." Ed looked up at his brother and shook his head. "Well thank you anyway."
"Don't worry Ed," Gracia's motherly tone met Ed's ear, "shes a strong girl, i'm sure she's jus-"
"Is that Ed!?" A rather familiar enthusiastic voice sounded in the background of the call. "Ooh lemme talk to him!" The sound of the phone being passed was heard then the man spoke, "Hiya Ed! It's Hughes here!~," Ed rolled his eyes, he could hear the goofy grin in the man's voice. "What's this I hear about Winry hmm? Did she run off on ya? You know Ed, you really need to be nice to her and settle down, have a family. Oh I know you should come by and see my lovely Elysia and let her adorableness inspire you to have a fami-"
"Lieutenant colonel Hughes!" A very flustered Ed yelled into the phone, ignoring the squeak of his teenage voice, "I'm Fifteen! I'm not starting a family. Goddamnit man. I'm really busy, you can gush at me another time!" Just as Ed went to hang up the phone the Hughes' voice spoke again.
"Wait Ed!" The man's voice was suddenly serious. "When was the last time anyone saw her?"
"I don't know, I guess when she left your place," Ed looked back at his brother who was searching the other side of the station. "We found her tool box here at the station, but no Winry."
"Well Ed," the man spoke again in his serious tone, "I don't want to worry you, but I'm working on a case right now where girls have gon-"
"BROTHER!" Al's loud voice cut Hughes off, "Brother look what I found!" The metal boy held up a woman's jacket... Ed's heart dropped. It was Winry's jacket. And it was ripped.
"Ed, ED! listen to me!" The muffled voice snapped Ed out of his moment of panic. "Listen Ed there has been a series of kidnappings around central, targeting women. That's why I'm home right now, to check on Gracia." After a moment of pause, to let his words sink in the man continued. "Ed I'm heading back to my office now, if you think Winry is involved with this case meet me there!"
"Come on Al," Ed spoke as he hung up the phone. He then turned to his brother with a determined expression. "Lets go find her!"
