Chihiro finds herself anticipating the weekends now, even more than she had before. Her club only meets once a week, on Wednesdays--this means that after being released from Saturday school, she has the entire day to spend with Haku. Usually, she cycles down to the river where they first met for the second time. Sometimes, when she's feeling particularly tired, he meets her at the gates of school, and wheels her bicycle for her as they walk together to nowhere in particular. She never questions how he knows.

Haku's fingers, when they brush hair away from her face, are slender, cool, and graceful. When he is happy, he does not grin widely like she does, but his quiet smile makes her feel giddy, as though she is swimming in his emotion.

The Kohakugawa has long since dried, but spending time with Haku is like dipping her limbs into cool, quiet water. When Chihiro mentions this, he touches her hand gently and says that he does not need a river to be a river god.
