After he resigned his commission and discovered his love of rum, Tortuga seemed the natural place for James Norrington to go. But when he saw Captain Jack Sparrow in that tavern, he went numb. For some reason, it never crossed his mind that he should find the pirate there. Numb with anger and numb with disbelief. This was his chance to redeem himself.. The feeling would stay with him throughout the entire adventure. When Mr. Mercer gave him the offer to when he handed over the heart to Beckette, he was numb with the realization that he could and would have his life back.
