Paper Tiger

"Please, for old time's sake?" And you should've said no, because maybe if you did then you wouldn't be in this situation. But you were lonely and she was so familiar, and she smelt like rain and you just couldn't shake that. You're sitting on the floor of a crisp, white bathroom and you're talking with her like you've known her forever, and you think maybe you did. The air smells of a mix of Clorox and Febreze and something in between it all, and yet there's something very magical about the moment. The spark that you had two months ago is still there and you both can feel it.

Your heart is thumping with the loud music coming from downstairs. This is the end of your sophomore year, and you're supposed to be at the party enjoying yourself, but instead you're sitting with her locked in a bathroom, and you know there is no coming back from this. "I really hate small spaces." She says breaking the silence, as her breathing begins to pick up. "It's okay Maya; we're going to get out of here." "Just breathe." You soothe. Her blonde hair is swaying back and forth as her head is bobbing up in down from her heavy breathing. There's a small brown mole on the curve of her cheekbone, and you wonder why you've never noticed it before.

"Maya." You whisper, as you rub her back, trying to calm her down. She looks up and her big, brown eyes lock with yours, and everything that you said two months ago is history. You tilt your head down and your bottom lip just grazes hers and she is everything and nothing all at the same time. It's not over, and you can't believe it took being locked in a bathroom with her to notice. She pulls away and she has that look in her eyes, the same look she had when you kissed her for the first time. Her hair is a disshelved mess of blonde and yet she's never looked so beautiful.

She's spunky and sexy and she's whispering your name, and that excites you. You want to tell her that what you said two months ago was a mistake, but after breathing in all the fumes of the small bathroom, you don't know anymore. You're exchanging confused glances with her and you wish that you were kissing again, because it seems a lot simpler that way. But with the way that she's staring, you could never leave her alone.

The lights in the bathroom go off and all you see is the light coming from the window. Her warm breath is lingering on your cheek, and the only sound left in the bathroom is the last smack of your lips on hers. And for the first time you're seeing her now, really seeing her, it's probably the prettiest thing you think. You pin her up against the bathroom door and you kiss her with everything you have in you, you've never kissed her like this before and she knows that your lives will never be the same. "It's not over, Maya." You whisper and she smiles. She laughs to the still air, and you want to tell her that her breath in your ear is the nicest thing you've ever heard, but the night is ending and you know that this moment won't last forever.

A paper tiger can't tell you where he stands; we'll go back tonight the way we came. I'm not dumb, I just want to hold your hand.
