A/N Hi! Hope you enjoy this one-shot!
It is set six months after The Serpents Shadow.
Disclaimer: I do not own The Kane Chronicles
Sometimes Bast came to visit Brooklyn House, to see how Carter and Sadie Kane and their initiates were doing. This time was one of these times, but even better, because she was going to spend 10 whole days, rather than just popping in for the afternoon, then returning to the gods in time for her job of defending the Sun Boat.
Everything was already arranged; Sadie and Carter had prepared her a room at Brooklyn House, Ra had agreed that she needed a break, and Sobek (though unwillingly) was to overtake her duties while she was gone.
When the cat goddess arrived at the mansion, she was quickly welcomed inside by her 'kitten' Sadie, whose hair sported lavender streaks this month. After a brief chat, Sadie told her that Carter was in one of the training rooms teaching the initiates with his girlfriend, Zia. Bast thanked her and went inside to find him.
She soon arrived at the room most often used for the Magical Combat lessons that Carter taught. When she poked her head in, Bast saw Carter with a group of initiates, as she had been expecting.
"Hello, my kittens!" She exclaimed.
"Oh, hey Bast!" Carter grinned.
"Hello, Bastet, goddess of cats," Zia said, then smiled shyly. She was still getting used to the new way in which the magicians treated the gods, so she opted for the fool-proof method of extreme politeness and respect.
Alyssa summoned a boulder, squashing a shabti flat. "It's great to see you again!"
"Yeah!" Julian agreed. Then he slashed a kopesh through the last clay warrior.
"Okay," Carter said. "Class dismissed. Good job today, everyone!" The young magicians all crowded around the goddess to greet her, then they all filed out of the room.
Bast struggled to contain her excitement about her holiday here any longer. She looked around the empty space, and she couldn't help herself; she ran to the far side of the large space, and after a run-up, she launched herself into a front handspring, then another. Soon she was doing a full-out tumbling routine, making it up as she went along. She ended it with a perfectly executed front aerial. Then she heard a voice coming from behind her.
"Hi Bast! I just came back for my staff, but that front aerial was so cool! I wish I could do that. Hey, can you teach me?" It was Jaz.
"Uh, I'm sorry, kitten, but I don't know how to teach – Just ask Sadie – and I really don't want to risk you getting hurt…"
"Please?" She begged, "I know some safety spells, and I'm sure teaching me won't be as hard as you think; I was a cheerleader before I moved here and I can already do a side aerial!"
"Oh, alright," the goddess agreed.
"Thank you. Thank you! THANK YOU!" Jaz grinned madly and started jumping up and down on the spot.
So, every afternoon for the rest of Bast's holiday at Brooklyn House, she helped Jaz learn to do a front aerial. And the one of the highlights of her visit was when, on the last day, she finally perfected the trick.
The End
