Chapter 1: Jailbreak, Part 1

SOME DISTANCE OFF THE COAST OF NOVA SCOTIA:

"Gib mir deine Zigaretten, bitte."

One of the guards handed a pack of cigarettes to his fellow.

"Nerves, I take it?"

The smoking guard nodded.

"I'm telling you, Max, you've got nothing to worry about. This place is impregnable. We've got sentry guns, robots, and the ice cold waters of the North Atlantic guarding these SOBs."

"Michael, think for a moment. We have all of the Brotherhood's lieutenants except for one."

"Mystique? SHIELD's going to get her sooner or later."

Max slapped his comrade.

"I don't think you understand the gravity of the situation. The Brotherhood's well-connected, and if they don't try to rescue their leaders, then their leaders will free themselves."

"Bull. Trask's collars-"

"Only work on mutants. You seem to have forgotten about some of our other inmates. Like that one man who was working with the Brotherhood- what was his name? Gremlin or something?"

"Hobgoblin, Max."

"Yes, that's the fellow. Anyways, think about it. Someone with his skills isn't just going to surrender like he did unless they were told to as part of a plan."

In the Raft's cafeteria, the prisoners stood in line for their dinner. The white panelling of the walls, the fluorescent lights, and the metal grated floors served to intimidate its inmates. Soon, the prisoners would pay like unto their captors.

At the far east end of the room, five persons sat around a small table as a sixth joined them. This new arrival was a tall and lanky fellow, with messy black hair and a pair of tinted glasses lending an aloof affect.

"Mister Kingsley, join us." one of the diners intoned.

"I was already planning to, Magneto." Kingsley retorted.

"Roderick, cut the 'Magneto' crap. Ah know you know that you're part of the Brotherhood, even if ya ain't a mutant like us."

Kingsley cut into the night's dinner.

"Grows on you, doesn't it? Especially if you're Quicksilver." he snarked, pointing his fork at his leader's son.

Another bespectacled man glared across at Roderick.

"You're fortunate enough to be skilled enough at what you do for me to ignore that, Hobgoblin. Otherwise, I'd have turned you into a shambling wreck. In fact, maybe I will-"

"You can't hurt me here, Mastermind. You know that as long as you have that collar on, you don't have your powers. None of you do. Fact is, all I need are reagents and something to put them in to be dangerous."

Mastermind slumped back into his chair in defeat as Hobgoblin shot him a smug look.

3…2…1…showtime.

In the bowels of the Raft, a small bomb went off. Shortly thereafter, the power went out in the rest of the facility.

"What the-" Rogue began.

"We're getting out of here." Hobgoblin answered.

"As if! We don't have our powers!" another woman exclaimed.

"You're partly wrong, Wanda. I deactivated your collar a few hours ago."

Wanda Maxinoff grinned as she raised her hands and discharged hex bolts on her cohorts. The collars were rendered useless within seconds.

"Mastermind, keep our fellow inmates and guards busy. I'm going to get our friend out of Ultramax with Quicksilver and Rogue."

The mustachioed psychic grinned evilly as he complied with Hobgoblin's request.
