Xander Harris watched Buffy Summers, his best friend, cry herself to sleep. He had snuck in and was now hiding behind the door. He made to leave but then she started crying in her sleep. He glanced over his shoulder and clenched his fists as his heart raced. He went to the bed and wrapped her in his arms. He smiled as she snuggled in to him. He didn't know why but he started to sing.
Goodnight, my angel
Time to close your eyes And save these questions for another day I think I know what you've been asking me I think you know what I've been trying to say I promised I would never leave you And so should always know Wherever you may go No matter where you are I will never be far away
Xander pulled Buffy closer to him and smiled as he saw her snuggle in. He shook his head and continued.
Goodnight, my angel
Now it's time to sleep And dream how wonderful your life will be Someday your child may cry And if you sing this lullabye Then in your heart There will always be a part of me
Buffy rubbed her nose against his chest causing Xander to stop. He looked at Buffy kissed her on the head and laid her back down. He started to stroke her hair. The sound of the door opening brought Xander away from Buffy. The man in the doorway had to smile because when Xander stood up, Buffy frowned. "Whistler what are you doing here?" Xander asked, a little bit surprised. The balance demon gestured to his watch. "Time's up," he explained. Xander looked from Buffy to Whistler and back. "But no," Xander began but Whistler's look silenced him. The demon grabbed Xander by the arm ad started to drag him to the door. "Listen kid, the PTB already is going to kick my ass for letting you stay this long." Whistler paused and turned back to Xander who had stopped moving. "Let me finish the song," the young man demanded. Whistler looked at the ceiling and muttered something Xander couldn't hear. When the demon looked back at him he nodded. "Yeah, finish your song." Pleased with the decision Xander turned back to Buffy and took her hand in his.
Someday we'll all be gone
But lullabyes go on and on. They never die That's how you And I Will be
With that, despite Buffy and his friends, the ghost of Alexander Lavelle Harris turned and followed Whistler.
