Notes: I was foolish enough to open myself up to the drabble meme on LiveJournal. As soon as I did, I got the idea for a fic titled 'After The Rain' with one of the Tomorrow People being put in the very situation that Lady Mulvaney had in mind. Why Kevin? Mostly because I'm already torturing Megabyte enough, and I wanted it to be someone who would have no loyalty to America, but plenty of loyalty to the two American Tomorrow People, Lisa and Megabyte. And it was just too easy to make Adam a martyr. So, Kevin it was. As for the implications, yes, I know they're there. Damned telly is playing reports of suicide bombers in Baghdad.
Dedication: To everyone who is thoroughly sick of the whole 9/11 thing and America's arrogance—I swear, we're not all that bad.
Distribution: Ask, and ye shall receive.
IT WASN'T FAIR, when you got right down to it. But then, nothing in his life had ever been fair. Megabyte might have said that was fatalistic, but Kevin didn't care. A person was entitled to be fatalistic before they died.
Kevin stared down with loathing at the thing strapped to his chest. It was a shrapnel bomb. Lady Mulvaney hadn't been the only one who'd thought to use a teleporter to deliver her packages of death. The men who had put the bomb on him had told him to teleport into the American President's office where the bomb would detonate. Of course, they would detonate the bomb and kill him if he teleported anywhere else.
Catch 22.
Kevin was British. He had no loyalty to America.
But Lisa and Megabyte did. Lisa had left the Tomorrow People to protect her mother. And Megabyte was the closest thing to a brother that Kevin had. He'd never see them, or Ami and Jade and Adam again. They knew what had happened to him. He hoped that they would be able to recover his body. After...
[We will, Kev.]
He smiled. Good old Megabyte. The men around him shifted uneasily. One of them prodded him in the back and said something that Kevin didn't understand. The meaning was clear, though. They wanted him to get a move on.
[I love you guys,] he 'pathed sadly. [Goodbye.]
He teleported.
It was raining on Ascension Island.
