This is my quick story after I watched a league of their own. It isn't much but basically about evelyn and how she tries to improve herself just to feel someone take pride in her. It's a hint of Evelyn/Jimmy but not really.
He aint my Husband
'There's no crying in baseball!' Jimmy Dugan's voice rang inside Evelyn's head reminding her so much of her husband. She still felt the tears in her head as she sat down in the darkest corner of the dug out and all because another man yelled at her. She could see her son, "Stilwell Angel", throwing his chocolate wrappers on the ground, Harvey bars as well. The bars tasted like cow manure, but he didn't mind.
But she couldn't help herself from thinking what Jimmy had said. 'No crying in baseball!' Just thinking that brought a fresh wave of tears to her eyes. She felt herself thinking, 'I'm just another disappointment.'
"Evelyn it's ok," Betty 'Spaghetti' soothed her. Evelyn nodded but she still couldn't stop the tears from falling. She was always too sensitive.
Dottie Hinson was kind enough to let her sit out for the rest of the game. Evelyn didn't think she could perform right for the rest of the evening. Truth was she always nervous going out to play ball. She always ended up making some mistake one way or another and killed her to have everyone mad at her.
"She still crying?" A loud voice cut through the chatter of the girls. Evelyn didn't have to look up to know who spoke.
Jimmy Dugan took a seat next to her on the bench in a very stiff manner and spat a wad of tobacco out into the dirt. She flinched nervously in his presence.
"How's it going?" He asked making small talk.
She sent him a small glance and looked away quickly. "F-Fine." She answered in a small voice.
"You know what 'your'…your problem is?" he asked. His head was shaking as he tried to squelch his anger. She simply nodded no. "You move to… slow. B-by the time you make up your mind to hit the damn ball it's already a… s-strikeout."
She still only nodded.
"Ok?" He asked he was still shaking but less severely now.
Evelyn still nodded slowly but gained enthusiasm as he had not yelled at her again. "Ok." She smiled relieved.
"Ok. That's something we're gonna need to work on before the next game."
Evelyn smiled happily as she hit a home run, her first of the season and with the bases loaded, too. She knew she wasn't the best ball player on the field. Why, that title belonged to Dottie. But as she ran along the bases she felt like a hundred bucks. Boy, if her husband could see her now, she'd yell 'who's the slouch now!' but alas only in her mind.
She could see her fellow peaches cheering happily just as she ran across first base and Jimmy Dugan clapping proudly. A small spread across her face, she couldn't help but feel so proud of her self. Finally cheers and claps instead of jeers and slaps.
She slowed to a trot as the girls surrounded her patting her on the back excitedly. "You did well, Evelyn!" They shouted.
"We're in the series," Jimmy shouted. He spat a wad spit onto the ground, crazily, and picked Evelyn off the ground, swinging her as he hugged her. "We're in the series he shouted!"
Evelyn giggled and a pink tinge spread through her cheeks. Yeah, maybe he wasn't quite like her husband but she never felt a man proud of her before but…damn it, it felt good. She knew it was wrong to take pleasure from someone else's touch but it just felt to good. She should play just to feel his pride more often
The end.
