Send me the Moon

Dylan Harris was walking in the Central Park with his father, Thomas Harris. They'd just finished their special once-a-year picnic dinner and were now walking around aimlessly. Dylan always looked forward to these birthday dinners. It was the only time he would actually get to interact with his father who was always preoccupied with his work. Dylan understood his father's situation. After all, everything he did, he did for Dylan, as he was a single parent.

On these special picnic occasions, his father would make up for all the times he could not be there for Dylan. This particular night was rather pleasant. "The full moon is so beautiful that even Santa must want to ride across it!" Exclaimed Corey, Dylan's soon-to-be step brother. had insisted that his fiancé and Corey accompany them on Dylan's 15th birthday dinner.

That part was something Dylan really didn't like much. His only chance I getting closer to his dad had now disappeared. How he wished his father had consulted him before deciding to get married. Sharon was nice, quite different from the standard evil stepmother he had expected her to be. He was glad about that but...

He tried to push all those thoughts away and decided to focus on his dad's present. His dad had promised he'd tell him about his mother, his real mother, on his 15th birthday. What better present could Dylan ask for? Alas! His father had failed to keep the promise so far. Dylan guessed that his father wanted him to 'bond' with the new family members first...

As the family of four strolled through the park, Dylan stared up at the beautiful moon. Pure white as always. For some reason, he always felt peaceful when he looked at the moon.

"Mom, if you can hear me right now, I really wish you could be here. I will hopefully get to know you soon and hope that you accept me for who I am. Plus, a birthday card once in a while won't hurt..."

The night came to an end and it was time to bid goodbye to Sharon and Corey.

"Happy birthday sweetie! I hope you had as wonderful a time as I did!" Said Sharon.

"You're my big brother now right?! Yay! Bring me lots of presents on my birthday!" Said 6-year old Corey innocently.

Sharon hushed him while the others laughed.

Thomas asked his son whether he should call for a cab home. Dylan politely refused and answered by saying, " I'm in the mood for another long walk today."

The winds blew against Dylan's face. Usually, the cold night breeze was a refreshing one. That night, however, there was something different about them. Something was going to go wrong and Dylan could feel it in his bones.

20 minutes later, in the hospital.

The car had crashed into his father as he tried to save him...

Dylan sat crouched up on one of the hospital chairs. "Please, please let him be okay!" He would whisper that constantly to himself. If only he'd agreed to taking that cab, it would all be alright. If only he'd looked before crossing the road his father wouldn't be in this condition right now. He kept waiting, hoping that a doctor would come out saying that he's fine but no such thing. "Oh my god, Dylan! I'm so sorry!"

Dylan looked up. It was Sharon. She looked a though she was going to cry but he knew that she was holding back her tears for his sake. Dylan got up and hugged her tight. This gesture surprised Sharon because Dylan wasn't the kind of person who hugged people, least of all her. He whispered to her, "this is all my fault. I did this to him." He couldn't hold back his tears any longer.

Sharon tried consoling him and said, " Don't you dare say that this is your fault. It's not, do you get that? Let's take you home now."
