But perhaps it was only an echo...
The Giver Chapter 24
The icy winds showed no mercy to Jonas and Gabe as they trudged against it in the snow.
"We're almost there, Gabe, Elsewhere is near," Jonas whispered to him. Gabriel was nestled in the blanket against Jonas, so cold, so weak. Elsewhere was so near, but still impossibly distant, like a child waiting for the next Christmas to arrive. Jonas knew he couldn't make it, he could no longer move forward in these conditions. "No!" He thought, "I have to, for Gabe's sake."
"Jonas, Jonas!" Gabriel cried. Perhaps maybe even he knew that he and Jonas wouldn't last much longer.
"Don't worry Gabe we're almost there, we'll make it, we have to!" Jonas whispered, just loud enough so it wouldn't be erased by the howl of the wind.
"Look there's a house over there!" Jonas cried. "We'll make it don't worry it's just a little bit more!" However, Jonas, was so cold, his legs were so numb, he could no longer stand, let alone walk, he had to crawl. The only thing keeping him awake now were the enticing, colorful lights on the house. Gabriel was growing weaker by the moment, yet he used all his might to stay alive. Each step of a crawl was a pain to Jonas, but they had finally managed to reach the doorstep of the house.
"Look Gabe, we've made it, we've finally made it!" Jonas cried. They were both sheltered from the icy winds. It was less cold under the roof. "Now to get inside, and warm up!" Jonas knocked on the door with his numb hands, however the winds must've blocked the sound, neither Jonas nor Gabriel could hear a thing.
"I guess, they don't know we're here, maybe they'll realize soon, it's time to rest Gabe, time to rest," Jonas whispered. "Rest..."
"JONAS!" Gabriel screamed without making a sound. He realized he was losing him. Yet he was so tired, so weak, Gabriel too, shut his eyes into darkness...
Epilogue
The piercing scream of a child had awoken many from the community of Elsewhere on Christmas day. The child had discovered a boy and a baby both stone cold on the doorstep of their home, when the child was about to go sledding on the new fallen snow. Neighbors of Elsewhere swarmed around. A doctor pronounced them both dead, apparently from hypothermia - they had frozen to death. They had died around 5:00 that morning. It was now 9:00, the sun had risen, the blizzard had come to a stop, and the heat of the day was starting to cause the icicles to drip. Four hours too late.
Yeah, this is my first and probably my last Giver fanfic. I wrote this in English way back in January.
