It had come to him that week. In three days it would be his father's birthday. His father was about to turn fifty-eight but had the energy and spirit of a man twenty years younger. Nate had always been close to his parents, seeing as he was their only son. He wanted to give his father something that showed how much he loved him.
"You okay?" Phoebe asked, nudging him on the shoulder. She was drying the dishes he had just washed. Nina and her husband had invited the two to their new house for dinner. Tom had cooked up a dish that made their mouths sing.
Nate snapped out his thoughts. He had a plate in one hand and a sponge in the other with the water still running. "It's dad's birthday in three days. I was wondering what to get him," he said not paying attention to the dishes.
Phoebe had known the Bartowski patriarch nearly her entire life. Chuck Bartowski was a kind and warm man who loved his family more than anything in the world. He didn't need material things; he had even driven the same car for twenty years and only bought what he needed. His wife and children and friends were his true wealth, as he always put it.
"I want to get him something that shows how much I love the man."
Phoebe grinned. "He already knows how much you love him."
"I know but I want to give him something special because he's been there for me my entire life."
It was the next morning that Nate mounted a blank canvas in his work room. One of his many skills was with a brush; he was quite good at it and made an okay living with it before he returned to the spy life. He stared at it, wondering what to paint.
He blinked when something came to mind. A grin spread across his face as he dipped his brush and started to apply the paint. Like many good painters of the past, he had his own personal style that he added. A lot of people commented that his paintings looked like they could come alive any second.

Chuck blew out the candles on his cake. So far, it was the best birthday he ever had. He had his lovely wife Sarah and his darling children with their respective spouses. Ellie and Devon had come with Stephen to celebrate his birthday. However, their eldest, Clara, was unable to attend, currently in the middle of a marathon surgery at the hospital. They were all that he could ask for.
Nate was the first to speak. "I made something for you, Dad." Nate quickly got up and grabbed a wrapped painting from the foyer of the house.
Chuck's brow furrowed, wondering what his son painted for him. He had always liked his son's work. His son handed him the wrapped gift. Chuck carefully tore the paper wrapping off and let out a small gasp. Sarah gasped loudly beside him.
It was a younger Chuck holding an infant Nate in his arms, and they were both sporting a smile. Tears welled up in his eyes as he smiled and laughed heartily.
