Her name was Danielle - God is my judge - and she was the apple of her
parents' eye. A lovely girl with impeccable manners and a smile of an
angel; the bishop often said it was if a Virtue had come down from heaven
and taken human form. Even Sister Hannah, who was always fair-handed, took
a shine to the little girl; looking the other way when strange things
happened around her. Like when the nasty boys from the local comprehensive
decided to deface the inside of the school's chapel; Danielle seemed to
almost miracle the mess away. Her parents considered themselves blessed, to
have such a daughter.
Of course this all changed once the letters came. The first one was disposed of quickly; after all it was just a cruel hoax, a prank from one of the devil's families who lived in the tower blocks opposite. The second and the third went just as fast. Then more came, quicker and in larger numbers; more thought had to be given to them then. A stern reply was sent - by owl just as the letters requested, despite how ridiculous it seemed - declining their daughter's place at the 'school'. Danielle would get a good, Christian education at Holy Trinity; a Catholic school on the far side of town.
And then the man came, with his outlandish garb and ungodly words. Dumbledore, he said his name was, and he was soon shown the door. Her parents looked at their little girl in a different manner now; as if she was a snake in the grass, waiting to attack them. Danielle was excited by the news the nice old man brought, she'd been given a gift after all and she was anxious to learn how to use it. She could help the Bishop fix the leaky part of the roof in the church and then all the money he'd raised could go to the sad lady who lived in the alley near the supermarket.
The man, Dumbledore, came several more times, and at last her parents agreed to let her go to the school for witchery; if only to let their daughter see how evil it was, how much it went against God's plan.
This did not happen though, the little girl excelled in magic, enjoying each day she spent at Hogwarts to the full. She honestly did not understand why her parents objected so, after all she still did what the Bishop had told her was right, and never sinned.
Christmas came, and Danielle had gone home to spend the holiday with her parents. As she left King's Cross, none could see any problem with the little family. All were happy to be reunited once more. After all, the girl had never been parted from her family for this long before.
December ended and January began but it wasn't until the end of the month that the teachers began to worry. Danielle had not yet returned to school, and no word was heard from her or her family. Eventually it was decided that Dumbledore would visit her home once more, to fetch her back.
He returned empty-handed; a twinkle no longer in his eye. 'God has judged her' her parents had said solemnly, their voices dead calm.
Little Danielle has a sister now - Hannah - and her name is written down just under the crossed out name of her sister. She will go to Holy Trinity though, and if a few strange things happen to her in her life; well... miracles happen.
