A Comet Pulled From Orbit
Her big sister didn't like to sleep.
"Anna… I want to go back to bed."
"What? Even though the sky's awake? Elsa!"
Elsa wondered if the sky had also been jerked awake by Anna's uncontainable energy; the way Elsa was being dragged through the dark halls in mismatched slippers and an oversized coat. "What if Mama and Papa look for us?"
Her sister's grin flashed bright in the grey light. "Then we can make them play with us—now come on, come on, come on!"
Elsa stumbled—tripped—after her sister's hyperactive shadow. She was kind of excited because Anna was excited and that meant everything would be a lot of fun. But she didn't like the dark and her legs were shorter than Anna's, and she was five years old now but Papa said good girls do as they're asked—even though all he ever asked of Elsa was to be good.
She rubbed her eyes.
Anna slowed down and looked over her shoulder. "You're not awake yet," she said, disappointed.
She was trying but… Elsa shook her head.
Anna had her thinking expression on. Elsa liked it when Anna did real thinking, because the freckles on her nose wrinkled into funny faces. "Okay," Anna said. "Come here, sleepyhead."
Elsa peeked through her fingers, catching a glimpse of her sister's twinkling blue eyes. She smiled shyly and held out her arms.
Anna tried to hide her grin. "Are you gonna build a snowman with me?" she teased.
"Uh huh!"
"And you're not gonna tell Mama and Papa?"
"Nuh uh!"
"Promise?"
She crossed her heart.
Her sister chuckled. "Wrong side, silly."
Elsa scrunched up her little face. "But that's what you did last time."
"Oh. Erm… let's just build a snowman already!" Elsa squealed as Anna picked her up and ran, leaving laughter in the halls. She knew they should be quiet in case they woke everyone in the big castle and she knew she should really walk by herself because Anna always made them fall down the stairs and that was always ouch. Elsa was only five, but she knew a lot of things.
She knew that chocolate kept the monsters away and that fairy tales were real, somewhere in the big world. She knew that snow was fun and hugs were warm. She knew that it didn't matter where your heart was as long as you meant it. And she knew that Gerda had started turning their nightlight off, but the little cherry snowflake was always flickering merrily when she needed the bathroom at night.
She knew that the sky was only awake when Anna was, and she knew that those were the best hours of every day.
Someone had taught her, after all.
A/N: This oneshot is not new. I posted it on tumblr when I was still writing The Sky Is Awake, and realised I've never shared it here. Just some cute 'what if Anna was big sister' fluff. Sorry it's not anything new!
