"Okay, thank you Kyle; that was very good. Sophie Cohen? You're up next." Sophie Rose walked to the front of the classroom with the poster in her hand. The fifth grader wasn't scared of talking in front the class; her dad had taught her to speak her mind since she had uttered her first word. She hadn't been able to shut up since, but her characteristic Cohen-babbling was definitely helpful on days like this. She set the oak tag up in the chalk-holder of the blackboard, straightened her index cards, and turned to face her classmates.
"My name is Sophie Rose Cohen, and I am eleven years old. Today I am going to tell you about my family." She stood to the side of the picture glued to the poster board, and pointed to one of the people she had drawn, a tall figure with dark hair and bushy eyebrows. "This is my Dad. He used to be a lawyer, but now he teaches law at UC Berkeley. He comes from New York, and likes bagels. I'm named after his mom, the Nana. She passed away a few years after I was born, but he says I'm a lot like her. I guess she was really stubborn too." She shuffled that note card to the back of the pile and pointed to the next figure, with long blonde hair. "This is my mom. She used to work for a big corporation called The Newport Group, but then took a break. She decided she didn't want to go back, so she started her own business with her friend Julie to find people dates. Then she had me, and now she works for a small advertising business here in Berkeley."
Sophie cleared her throat before pointing to the next two figures – two men, one a stocky blonde and the other a lanky brunette. "These are my brothers. They're both thirty, and they both live in Oakland. Ryan is an architect, and right now he's working on that office building down the street from here, and he comes to visit me for lunch sometimes. Seth draws his own comic, called Atomic County. My friend Paul really likes it, but I don't get it. My favorite character is Little Miss Vixen, though. They come home to visit us every once in a while, especially for Christmukkah, which is my family's favorite holiday."
Moving down the line, Sophie pointed to two females. "These are my sisters-in-law. The shorter one is Summer, and she and Seth got married when I was six. She's holding my nephew Noah, who just turned one. When I get older, they're going to let me babysit! Summer really likes the environment and takes me to the beach a lot. She works for this organization called G.E.O.R.G.E. in Oakland. They help save baby seals. She pointed to the other young female. "This one is Taylor, who is crazy. She talks really fast and works for this company that does a lot of business with France. She and Ryan got married last year. I like having sisters, because boys are weird." She was about to ask for questions, as required, before she remembered one last thing. "Oh! And this is Flapjacks. He is very old, as old as me, but he's a very good bunny. Ryan gave him to me for my fourth birthday. So, that's my family. Any questions?"
As had been the case over the last few days, no one raised their hand, so the teacher wrapped things up by starting a round of applause. "Alright, class, that's all the time we have for presentations today. Please get your things together and get ready for lunch." She walked up to the front of the class, where Sophie was rolling up her poster. "Nice work, Sophie! A very complete presentation. It seems like you have a very nice family. Looking at your picture, I'd say you and Ryan look more like your mom and Seth looks like your Dad?" Sophie smiled. "That's what everyone says!"
