Something Tangible

Opening Notes: Well, its a whole new beginning guys. For those unfamiliar with my fiction--and who could blame you? Its been years--I normally start and end with these notes. But they're normally not as long as this one, and only when I need to say something about it.

Basically, this a considerably longer tale than previous ones, and better thought out in my opinion. Yes, it actually has a plot. Yes, there is--not one!--but two romance subplots. There is some action. Jokes, tears, and general fluff abound. And words too.

:: 00 - Prelude

It was getting dark now. Violet and yellow and orange hues streaked across the sky. An ominous red was fading from beyond the horizon, barely visible now. A few birds were quietly chirping from the outer reaches of Jump City, but the normal traffic noise was gone alltogether, this far out.

True, this type of operation wasn't his style... but he couldn't be too picky now. The shabby warehouse was rusted metal nightmare. The roof creaked with every sign of a breeze, the windows cracked and jaded with years of dirt and dilapidation.

On the dirt floor--the tiling had worn away long ago, leaving only the faintest chuncks of the previous flooring--laid two peculiur objects. One was resembled a shape of a capsule. Its square base sank into the floor. A single small window laid at the center of it, on the door that was the path inside it. Visible from that was a mans face, his eyes wide with any mixture of emotions. Almost devoid of them entirely. His jet black hair swam wavily inside the capsule, his breathing slow and steady through the tubes that contained him as the chemicals in the tank sedated him.

The other object was almost three times larger than the capsule, and extended all the way to the roof of the warehouse, where a hole was torn at the top to allow it to extend further. Dozens of metallic tubes and cords hooked onto the base of the contraption, where they feeded into several outlets and power sources throughout the warehouse. On top of that was a sphere, a quarter of it cut to make a seat with various blank readings and hundreds of complex dials. From that, at a steep angle, stood a long cylindrical pipe, a barrel at the end of it.

A figure stepped onto a platform that wrapped around the inside of the building. His hands were clasped behind his back, a genuine grin forming at his mouth. Another one stepped onto the platform, observing what he had done, a smile forming at her lips too.

Slade flipped a switch, a whirring sound reverberating deep inside the machines. "I believe we have waited long enough here."

"Yes, those damned Titans are in for a surprise," Terra replied. Her grin was still visible.

Closing Notes: Yes, this isn't an example of a long chapter. But guess what? It isn't one! It is a prelude. And I've taken the liberty to bring back two of my favorite characters. Back from the dead, it seems. As writer, I play God. Stay tuned for more.
