"Lily," he called.
She paused, flashing that smile she reserved just for him. "Hey, Severus."
He took a deep breath. It'd taken him seven years to muster up this courage; he had to do it before he chickened out.
"I was wondering if you'd like to go to Hogsmeade with me this weekend," he said in a rush.
Her face fell, "I'm sorry, Severus, I really am," and she truly sounded it, "But I have a date… with James."
As he watched her walk away he vowed to immure his heart behind an impenetrable wall. And that's what he did.
