Haibara stood at the edge of the cliff, looking at the angry waves dashing at the rocks below. The calm moonlight illuminated the sea with a gentle white glow. The sea wind brushed against her face and outstretched arms. She inhaled, and closed her eyes.
"HAIBARA!" Conan yelled, running up to her and pulling her away from the crashing waves, "what were you thinking?" Haibara looked up at him, surprised, then closed her eyes and smiled.
"I was just enjoying the sea breeze for the last time," she answered.
"The last time, what do you mean?" he asked.
"About a month ago, they sent me a letter, those people whom you call the men in black," seeing Conan's quizzical expression, she went on, "They found out about my identity, where I lived, and who knew the organization's secrets."
"Wha-what? How could they have? "he asked, horrorstricken.
"I don't know… But they offered me a deal. I would go back to the organization and they would leave everyone I'm related to alone. I don't know why they want me so badly, but-"
"No! You can't! They'll kill you!"
"Yes, that's what they'll probably do. But if I don't go, there's going to be a battle between the organization and the FBI. Countless lives would be lost if that happens, and also the people around me would also get killed. You, the detective from Osaka, Agasa, the Detective Boys, and… her, Ran."
"But-"
"One life for countless others. Don't you think it's worth it?"
"No… You can't! You just can't…" Conan stammered. Haibara sighed. She reached inside her pocket and pulled out a vial with a red and white pill in it.
"It's this, right?" she said sadly, "I guess that's all I mean to you. The provider of the antidote to APTX 4869. But it's ok. I'm the one who messed up your life… I'm sorry…"
"Baka!" Conan pulled Haibara into a tight embrace. "You mean more to me than just a maker of the antidote. You are the one and only Haibara Ai, right?" Haibara smiled, and tenderly put her hand on his cheek, leaned in, and kissed him. Conan's eyes widened, but he also melted into the kiss. Tears streamed down both of their faces, and Haibara slowly pushed away. She turned, and ran off into the darkness.
"Sayonara, Shinichi…"
"No…" Conan cried, his hand reaching out to her slowly fading figure, and dropped to his knees. "No…No…" He slammed his fist on the ground. "Why?..."
Rain started pouring, as if the heavens itself was crying for Haibara. Conan slowly got up, and walked away. Haibara's last sad smile appeared in his mind again and again. Her last words revolved around in his head.
If only I had known… She loved me, but kept the grief to herself… Why didn't I realize? Now she's gone… forever…
He bolted away as fast as he could, the rain pelting against his face, but he didn't care.
I'm sorry Shiho… I'm truly sorry…
