"Lord, what fools these mortals be!"
A Midsummer Nights Dream Act 3, scene 2, 110–115
I guess you could say Madara's plan succeeded. He did become the Jubi jinchūriki and he even covered the world in an "Infinite Tsukiyomi".
But it wasn't him who was controlling the world through it, it was Jubi.
That marked the beginning of The Great War. The five shinobi nations joined together as one to fight against the single ten tailed beast.
We didn't even put up a decent fight; the sage of the six paths truly must have been a god to defeat the ten tails.
Eventually the gods took mercy on us. In the greatest summoning that was and is and will be we summoned them. A hundred thousand thousand human lives were sacrificed to end the war.
Amaterasu, Izanagi, Akuma, Tsukiyomi, Susanoo, Adachigahara, Benten, Baku, Raiden, and Aizen-Myoo all fought against the beast who by now was engorged on our flesh. For one hundred days they battled, and upon the beasts defeat each of the tailed beasts spawned from his body were again sealed.
The beasts would die with us.
But the gods must have forsaken us.
That legendary battle was the cause of The Desolation. The amount of chakra good and bad soon burned all living things from the earth. Clouds began to form from the smoking bodies of the dead. Huge cracks in the ground and the clouds keeping sunlight trapped heated the world. It wasn't uncommon to see lava forming a path. Water evaporated, deserts formed, and the world was plunged into darkness.
Within one generation all animals were dead.
Within two plants were gone.
Three and we were eating off the corpses of our fallen.
By the fourth humans, the most versatile and adaptable beings of all life, were a thing of the past.
We were left breathing nothing but smoke and sulphur. The beasts sealed inside of us refused to die; they kept us alive on their chakra alone. Food no longer existed. The earth cooled and water fell from the sky but it burned our throats to drink it. The world was still dark and nothing existed anymore.
The Bijuu began to grow desperate.
With our bodies fading away they put us into a form of stasis, only awakening when we were in danger.
Little changed through the years. The few times we awoke to save ourselves, we saw meteors fall from the sky, volcanoes eruptions occurring, earthquakes, tsunamis. Soon even when we were released from stasis we could not even talk because of the chakra it took to keep those functioning. We soon lost most of our bodies because they were unessential to stay alive. We began waking up less and less. But we were slowly dying and we knew it.
The chakra of a Bijuu is not infinite; eventually it runs out.
Gaara was the first to go. Soon every time we woke up we only did so because another of our number died.
My beast, being the Kyuubi, lasted the longest. All the others are dead now. I don't even remember the last time I've eaten, saw light, or even felt anything.
I am dying. I always believed I would die in a courageous battle. I dreamed I would die fighting for my country and home. I hoped I would die a hero. I wished I could die with my wife and children. I believed my last moments would be ones with my children. But it is none of these. I am dying alone. I am dying far away from anywhere. I am dying long after anyone I once knew. I am dying.

This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper. "
