After being introduced to My Immortal by friends, a consensus was reached that rewriting and re-imagining it would be both an entertaining experiment and a challenging task. After a little encouragement, I decided that I would use my spare time to give it a go. I came to the conclusion that if I was going to rewrite the infamous fan fiction; I wouldn't just readjust the sentences to make them grammatically correct - I would try to completely give it a new angle.
As far as the plot is concerned; I have have tried my best to incorporate as much of the original story line as possible without this version becoming just as implausible as the first. Each chapter mimics the original chapters in basic plot, however I have edited some things at my discretion in order to make the entire story more in-keeping with the actual Harry Potter books. For example, all mentions of My Chemical Romance and their (ex) singer Gerard Way have been removed from this version, due to the fact that My Chemical Romance did not become famous until after the time setting of the Harry Potter series. This, sadly, includes shortening Ebony's spectacularly contrived name. This principle applies to many of the other things mentioned in the original which don't actually fit into the HP universe; such as Amy Lee, Good Charlotte, Hot Topic (a shop which has very little presence in the UK) and countless others. I also absolutely refuse to rename Harry 'Vampire' - I mean, come on, really?
With regards to the sexual scenes, I said I would include as much of the original as I could bring myself to and that does include some scenes of a sexual nature. Up until this point I have never even considered adding sexual scenes to any of my other fan fictions. Though I am prepared to include them and write them to the best of my ability, they also will not be unnecessarily graphic.
I would like to make it clear that this has not been done to try to shame / mock Tara Gilesbie or her story. Though the internet has their opinions on the story, as do I, reading My Immortal undeniably brings amusement to its readers. The question I am intrigued to answer is, if it had been a little better written, does this story have the potential to be good? The answer, most likely, is no. Many would argue that it is beyond any form of redemption. Either way, some strange compulsion has inspired me to rewrite it, and whatever the outcome is, that is what I shall do.
