"I've signed us up for a pub quiz tonight." Brian told the group.
"Well why did you do that?!" Sandra asked.
"I said I had plans." Gerry moaned.
"Change them." Brian said cheerily.
"Have you any idea what subjects are coming up then Brian?" Sandra asked regretting the fact she'd turned up and then even more that fact that she'd asked that.
"Not a clue but my specialised subjects is crime since 1960. If that comes up then we'll fly ahead. I've also been reading up on modern history and animal and plant life." Brian told them all seeming extremely pleased with himself. "What's your specialised subjects?"
"Dinosaurs." Sandra said referring to the three old men around her but Brian seemingly not getting what she was meaning.
"What's your favourite kind?"
"No Brian, I meant you lot."
"Oh. Gerry? Jack?"
"Brands of fags." Gerry told them much to Sandra's annoyance.
"That will help Gerry." Brian replied sarcastically.
"Well you didn't give us much warning. Anyway it's just a bit of fun."
"Fun?!" Brian almost shouted. "No! We need to win! To defend our honour."
"Brian it's a pub quiz, I think you're taking it too seriously." Sandra said gently.
"Jack, what's your specialised subject?"
"I don't know, not murdering you."
"Welcome to The Fox and Hound's annual pub quiz. Teams should be no more than 4 people. At the end hand in your answer sheets and each person taking part will get a free drink."
"Free drink? See I knew there was a reason we came." Gerry said rubbing his hands together with glee.
"Yeah, it makes it all seem worth it." Sandra agreed.
"Question 1, modern history."
"Yeah! It's my special subject." Brian whispered cheerily.
"Who's assassination was a contributing factor to the declaration of world war 1?" The group looked expectantly at Brian.
"Erm, I'm not sure." Brian said puzzled as to how he could not know something in his specialist subject.
"Franz Ferdinand." Sandra whispered as the boys looked at her in shock. "What? I remember that from history in secondary, it's one of the only things that stuck. Our teacher made it really fun." Sandra explained as she registered their looks of shock.
"Question 2, who was the last Tsar of Russia who abdicated in 1917?"
"Tsar Alexander." Brian said sure of himself as Sandra's expression clearly telling the others that that was wrong but she didn't want to say the correct answer.
"What Sandra?" Jack asked.
"It's not, it's Tsar Nicholas II." she said at a barely audible sound as her face turned red from embarrassment, before they had time to question her on her knowledge of history the next question was being read.
"3, which American president introduced 'Star Wars' as a plan to defeat the Russian's in the Cold War?" No longer did they look at Brian but instead turned straight to Sandra. She couldn't help but smile as she felt knowledgable but also there was a tinge of badness as this was supposedly Brian's specialist subject. These feelings were mixed with a good dose of embarrassment.
"Ronald Reagan."
"Didn't know you were into history." Gerry commented as she sat in the car with him waiting for him to drive her home.
"Yeah, it was my biggest love in school but I felt my dad would have wanted me to do policing. I used to read historical journals and books in my spare time but then policing began to take up all of my time and I haven't done it since."
"You should make more time to do things you love."
"I do, I love being at UCOS and I love spending time with you boys most of the time, and I love being with you." Sandra said as Gerry leaned over and kissed her.
"I love being with you too but you should make more time to look into history if you love it that much."
"My love of it in itself is history, I have better things to be doing now like curling up with you."
"As long as you're sure."
"I'm positive."
